DPDT to switch Feedback and Cathode Cap??

Post by RockinRocket »

Basic DPDT switch. Will this have any unwanted issues if I switch power amp negative feedback levels on one half and switch on/off a 12ax7 cathode bypass cap from the pre amp on the other half with one flip of a switch?

Negative feedback will switch in a parallel resistor. To minimize pop on the cathode cap I will have a small 50 pf cap to minimize pop for that part of the circuit.

I could separate them.. but less is more for this "voice" switch.

Voltage wise that switch is fine, bringing two signal together in to one place could make for oscillating to take place if they are in phase with each other, and there's no dought that the voltage / signal level on the feedback wire could be much higher then on that Cathode which would make it very easy to impress its signal into that Cathode if there in phase.

Even if they are not in phase you may get some phase canceling and a very middiey tone change when the two wires are brought near each other.

I would wire it up both ways First near where you want the switch to be before drilling any holes or ordering up the switch , then if the amp stays stable and or the tonal nature of the amp does not change, then have at the full on mod!

Note that if there are still any Radio Shacks around near you they may have that switch in stock, the same for a well stocked music store that does guitar repairs!
