New Project
Its been a while since Ive logged in. This stupid malware warning BS kept me away. Just started a new project. Picked up a Stromberg Carlson SAU-10 on ebay at a steal, compared to what they've been going for (I bid on it, not buy it now). Showed up right before Christmas. I was super excited to get it. Nice little single ended rig, everything is pretty clean on it except... both transformers. FML. So Im about to order a Classic Tone PT and Hammond OT, along with a few other minor tweaks. I have a little extra play money so Im getting PT/OT that can handle more than the originals so I can experiment with different output tubes. Ill have to tweak the circuit here and there and see what sounds good.
On another note, and Im sure its been discussed to death, how the hell can we get rid of this malware warning crap???

Re: New Project
FML? I don't know that one. Must mean they are toasted. Still, I like it. It's a nice compact chassis, ripe for a PTP single ended or you might even pack in a small PP configuration, maybe a pair of 6BM8 or something like that. You could drill for a 3rd socket if you plan well. PTP gives you better density than board construction.
The malware has be discussed. Look in the Garage section. There's no malware, so just ignore it. Glad to have you back.

Phil, we learn something new every day! Yeah, both Ts are blown.
I know there isnt any malware, and in all likeliness never was. Its the stupid google warning that pops up on EVERY single page and makes me have to click through stuff before Im allowed to view the page. I cant even log in from a normal browser. In order to get around it, Im having to use a TOR browser that and every now and again it randomly logs me off. Theres no reason for the warnings.

So, they've shortened it to whatevs? Man, I hated it when our middle child (only daughter) would say WHATever. She was a handful, and I am being very gracious when I say that. Funny thing is, she has turned out to be an amazing woman and mother, which has taken both my wife and I by surprise. We both thought she'd wind up pissing off the wrong person and get severely injured, or worse. She is now 28.xtian wrote:FML = F*ck my life! Ha! I didn't look close enough before. I see unlimited possibilities. I see there are 2 octal and one noval in the corner. That's the deal. You can put a plate in the octal sockets and drill for novals (or buy the adapter things), or go with your choice of a pair of octal power tubes. A 4th socket for a second dual triode will let you make whatever you can stuff into the available space. Definitely don't waste a tube hole on a rectifier. If you remove the can cap and can figure how to put them all inside, that's a good hole for a 6SL7 or 6SN7 depending on what you have in mind.
As for the browser, that seems odd. I'm using Firefox with Win 10 (and was same for Win 7). After I click through the warning (makes me do it twice) the warning goes away until I close the browser session. Chrome is more challenging. I stay clear of the big E thing that Microsoft forces you have have installed when you use their OS.
Lou: I'm reminded how many times I wanted to tell my girls, "Please leave home now while you still know everything." They are grown and turned into exemplary human beings.

Re: New Project
Im planning on leaving just about everything right where it is. Its got a tube lineup of 6AV6>6AU6>6L6GC/7027 with 5Y3GT rec. Output transformer primary is shot, rec plate secondary on the PT is shot. I am going to experiment with several different output tubes though. Im getting something thatll handle enough current for a KT88, although Ill probably never put one in this amp. Im planning on trying EL34, KT66, KT77 and of course 6L6 from schematic. Im just curious about how each one will sound.
As far as browsers, I use safari on a mac. Every single time I click a page I get a warning that I have to click through to get to the page. After the two pictures, theres a pop up asking if I want to continue to this site. I go through that every single time I click something. When Im on the log in page, after I put in my username and password, and then go through the warnings, it just sends me back to the log in page.
Of course, it also does it with chrome. The TOR browser is firefox more or less, so that makes sense, and I can log in with that obviously but it also logs me out sometimes and some IP adresses are apparently banned from here. Its still pretty freaking lame.

Re: New Project
Just go into Safari Preferences -> Security and turn off the warning. Works fine.
Re: New Project
Even worse. Shortened it to "Evs!"JazzGuitarGimp wrote:So, they've shortened it to whatevs?
But that was so ten years ago. Get with it.

I've shortened it to a slap from a beatdown.

Re: New Project
Something that stands out to me on the schematic is the input filter cap is double the recommended. Ive seen several amps do this. Whats the point of doing this? Were they trying to get rectifiers to burn out faster?

Re: New Project
Probably trying to reduce power supply ripple a bit since it's a single-ended amp. I wouldn't worry about the rectifier as it will naturally soft start as the filament warms up.
Re: New Project
Less than 60uF followed by a choke will let you add a butt load of capacitance afterward. SE amp draw.pretty steady current so the choke will have no negative effect.
