Univox U-1246 Master Volume

Post by dorrisant »

Just curious if any of you have ever put one in an amp like this... If so, what type.

I've read of using the LarMar type with good results. Would you use a dual 100k here? I don't see anything that would stop me... although I have the urge to install some screen grid resistors. Not my amp though... he loves it as-is, just wants to knock the volume down just a few db without changing anything in the rig... including lower efficiency speakers. He said change tube or fix anything bad.

Odd rectifier... I can't recall seeing the PT secondary connected directly to a series cap set like that... two different filter values at that. Oh well, it works and I learned something new.

The yellow wire coiled and terminated in the air is the unused primary tap for 100vac... WTF??? There are plenty of unused terminals on that rectifier strip-board. I guess you can lead a horse to water but you can't make him think!

The obsessive compulsive in me wants to fix that and change those power tube sockets to a couple of new Beltons. The one on the right barely spans to catch the mounting screws... that is good enough reason to proceed right?

Also, all three preamp tubes are Mullards with RCA black plate 6L6s... Sweetness!!

Don't put a master volume in it, get a set of China made Groovetube 6L6 ( 6L6-CHP ) outputs in a number 1 rating , or put in Groovetubes 6V6S ( JJ brand) in a number 10 rating.
You will likely have to wait out a order period for these but it will be worth it.
You will need to reset the bias with the 6V6 tubes.
I would also double up on that first 100uf 450 volt filter for added punch , as these amps are a tad short on current!

Is it a blue one? I love the styling on those amps!

No... But the owner has a blue one to match.

Sorry Steve, I don't have that much freedom here. Gotta stick to the owners plan.

I'd go with a Lar-Mar. 100k dual-gang pot, 1M safety resistors. I agree adding screen resistors is a good idea. The rectifier is a straight-up full-wave voltage doubler, except for the mismatched caps. I don't know what they were thinking there unless its just penny-pinching.

Ok... as repaired and modded.

500Ω screen grid resistors added, new power tube sockets and LarMar (dual 100k w-1Ms). Had to fix a loose input jack too.

Just wanted to post up a couple pics of the glass... I don't see real Mullards often enough. I've heard the comment that IEC relabeled tubes were a bunch of crap. I think this will help dispel that myth.

Btw... I did put some heatshrink on the yellow PT primary before I put it back in the headshell.
