Using passive effects loops for guitar pedals

Post by titser_marco »

Hi guys!

In the middle of a build now and I was thinking of doing a passive effects loop in this build, i.e. taps between preamp and PI but I was curious if this would work well with regular effects pedals.

My rig is mostly Boss and some Digitech pedals here and there and I am not sure if 1) the output from the preamp tube will fry the pedals and 2) if the pedals survive, whether the signal would still be enough to drive the PI. Also, where does one typically put the master volume in this configuration: before or after the pedals?

Thanks guys!

I've used passive effects loops on many amps effectively with Boss delay pedal, Carbon Copy delay, Wampler delay, Moen delay and Digitech reverb pedals.

They all worked fine for me in the passive loop. I either had a master volume before the passive effects loop or used a PPIMV type effects loop.

The amps I did this with all had LTPI.

The effects work very well with passive loop.

I use Boss RV5, Boss DD7, Klon, etc.

Measure the max signal level you're likely to use, work out the source impedance and likely capacitive loading from the send return cabling.
