New 20 watt SD build

Post by fusionbear »

This amp build started in March of this year. But, since I have been working a lot and have had very little extra cash, I just finished it. It is based on a Naylor Super Drive, but I use the Blencowe series loop and went for .047 coupler instaed of the .1's. I am using a pair of 6V6's. About 393B+ on the plates. Using a Classictone TW style OT. The PT and 5Hy choke were donated by a client from a Ceriatone I replaced transformers on. The PT is a 295-0-295 using SS rectification. and was a Laydown that I added legs to make a stand up.

With two kids in college, two kids part-time in private H.S. and a stay at home mom, every penny has to be counted now.... whew!

Great looking amp! I can't wait to hear it! I hope you're able to post a schematic.

Likewise. I was afraid to come here because my protection software kept me away...

It's a ruse. Apparently, we have "resting bitch face" over here.

Why are you wasting 1/2 of that 12AT7 by paralleling the triodes? You could be using one triode as a buffered effects send and have a complete functional effects loop with better performance and lower noise. There are many fine examples of effects loops on this site....

I don't know, this one is super quiet, simple, and the send level is reasonable. Which would you recommend? Totally open to suggestions.

most folks round here like the Dumbleator loop. It uses a 12AX7 but I don't see why a 12AT7 wouldn't work just fine. Valvewizard website also has a few nice examples of decent effects loops....

The Dumble Files section has plenty of schematics for the Dumbleator circuit....

Thanks for the reco's. I will continue to research. The loop in this amp is taken from Blencowe's Preamp book 1st edition, BTW...

A lot of elegance in the simplicity Carl. SD was going to be my next build also.
...on a side note...is Imperial Burger still in business? I've been out of LaHabra for 20 years, so likely not I suppose. Best pastrami sandwiches west of New York City in the 80s!!!
If it don't get hot and glow, I don't want it !

Imperial Burger is no more....

But, there are still a lot of really great places to eat. I am of Mexican descent and usually hate most so-called Mexican restaurants. But, "El Cilantro" is walking distance to my house and their food is delicious! Another block away, there is a traditional Japanese fast food joint called "Orange House" that has the best Sukiyaki, Curry, Tempura, and the common Teriyaki bowls that are delicious. Still run and cooked by a very old Japanese couple plus some employees. These are on Whittier Blvd, between Beach and Valley Home.

Ha! I used to consult for Rosemount Analytical in La Habra many years ago! I did a slew of pcb layouts for those guys.
