tube substitutes: solid state product - any experiences?

Post by Luuc »

AMT, a British - Russian firm produces a 12AX7 tube substitute. More I do not know. Just saw this on the internet.

Two questions:

1) anyone any experience?

2) is there a similar product?

I am an interested layman compared to a real amp tech. Willing to learn yes.
To me, for instance a solid state rectifier versus a tube rectifier is kind'a living proof of a common ground shared by my beloved tube amps and solid state, which have qualities in their own right for sure.

I received my 12A*7 replacements from Jet City a week or two ago. Got the "mixed" pack with hi, med, and low gain units. Plugged all three into my D'Lite, and it sounded fine--was not able to make any observations at this point, other than that they worked and did not sound bad. Hope to do more testing soon.

I'm looking forward to an unbiased, anonymous a/b analysis. This may call for a poll with clips.

While within the valve vs SS discussion, rectification is generally given a pass by us tube sniffers. But you're right, Luuc... but why should it? It most definitely affects things, perhaps moreso than other hairsplitting, be it capacitor composition, etc.
