Switch for Bridging Amp Channels?

Post by guitarbyte109 »

Hey guys.
I'm relatively new to amp building/modding and this is an idea that I've been playing around with that hopefully someone here will be able to shed some light on.
I was wondering if it would be possible to wire a switch that could act similarly to bridging the channels on a BF Bassman-style amp?

Thanks!

Yes, it's called a A/B box and tons of company's make them or you can find plans online to build one.

On the Bassman and many other amps just make note that you can not use bother channels at the same time as one is out of phase with the other due t o passing thru another gain stage!

More specifically, if you are looking to feed your guitar into both channels simultaneously, you will want an A/B/Y box, which allows you to feed your guitar into channel A by itself, channel B by itself, or "Y-cord" your guitar into both channels.

I have wired a mini switch into the jacks to allow either channel by itself or both at once. Not too hard, but you have to drill a hole. I usually put it behind the jacks up near the cab so that if it is center it is both, left and right for the channels that make sense, if that makes sense?????

Thanks for the replies, I had considered going the A/B/Y route but was really interested in doing so without adding another pedal to the board.

Yeah, that's exactly the sort of thing I had in mind. Would you by chance have schematic or picture of how you wired the switch?

It's the "Reverb" amps which have 1 channel out of phase with the other, because the reverb mixing stage adds one extra inverting triode; the non reverb ones (including the "bass" ones), do not have that problem.

The 6G6 and AA165 both have 3 inverting stages in the bass preamp and only two inverting stages in the normal preamp, so they have the problem.

In case anyone else is curious, here's a quick layout I created with the information I've received.
Thanks for all your help!
