Which OT for a 4x6V6 or 2x6L6 build?
I am waiting on a JM 2Rock style chassis from amplifiednation (along wit a 1x12 combo cab) and I want to build an amp suitable for either 4x6V6 or 2x6L6. I think it will likely be Dumble inspired but definitely not a clone. I probably will build it in stages--clean channel only to begin with, then add a loop, or reverb(?). But, then again, I could change my mind many times before actually starting this build. Anyway...
Which output transformer from triode is the better choice?
Fender Bandmaster, Pro, Vibrolux, Tremolux Style, 40W Output Transformer 4/8/16 Ohm ClassicTone 40-18006 -- $47.39
http://www.triodeelectronics.com/babareproreo.html
or
Fender Bassman, Super Reverb, Concert Style 50W / 60W Output Transformer 4/8/16 Ohm with M-6 Upgrade Classictone 40-18001 -- $72.79
http://www.triodeelectronics.com/surebareupho.html
Is it better to overspec the OT and have more OT wattage capacity?
Or, should I try to match the OT's watt capacity more closely to the expected output power?
***Please offer any advise or suggestions on this project. I am open to any ideas at this point--I'm not committed to anything yet.***

I would go with the larger bassman OT.

Maybe a Dynaclone A-470? I have a couple of originals in two of my builds and they are terrific OTs. Costly, but they're serious hunks of iron. 4.3k primary.

Yes. Heavier, more costly, but clearer bass tones. Unless you don't like that.M Fowler wrote:I would go with the larger bassman OT.

Thanks for the advice.M Fowler wrote:I would go with the larger bassman OT.
Would you still recommend the larger Bassman OT if I were to use it for a cathode biased PA with a clean'ish preamp?

$116.95 is probably cost prohibitive for me.
Isn't this serious overkill for a 40'ish watt guitar amp?

I guess I would likely prefer clearer bass.
How do you think it would effect the midrange?
Or, the high end?

4x6V6 is thirtyish watts not fortyish. The Bandmaster OT is adequate but the Bassman OT would be my choice, mo' bettah bass!
Mids should not be affected too much, highs should be extended some over the smaller frame OT.

Yes I would still recommend the larger Bassman OT for reasons guys have stated.brewdude wrote:Thanks for the advice.M Fowler wrote:I would go with the larger bassman OT.

Thank you for all the responses.
I will likely order the Bassman OT.

Yeah, they cost a bit. It's actually spec'd as a 35w OT, up to 70w. It's pretty much overkill for any recommended tube compliment in my book.brewdude wrote:Thanks.Blackburn wrote:Maybe a Dynaclone A-470? The 470 is a fine transformer all right. Sunn used them early on for their 40-ish watt amps. Also Dynaco MkIV and Stereo 70 amps which to my ears sound wonderful even in unmodified form. A little lacking in bass when pushed hard for hi-fi, but that can make for an attractive guitar overdrive tone.brewdude wrote:Thanks.Blackburn wrote:Maybe a Dynaclone A-470? Dynaco A-431 is the overkill one, from the MarkIII amp. Sunn used these in their 100W and up amps. I have clocked one delivering a clean 120W with 4xKT88 driving it in a Sunn PA amp. If I'm not mistook Ken Fisher often used the Dyna MkIII iron in his Trainwreck Express. Good sounding, heavy duty, and available cheap from second hand Dyna gear.

I used the MC 40-18006 in a 2x6L6 2nd gen hybrid thing and absolutely love that amp. Never a b-eed with Bassman size iron in that amp though

This will work great.
Have done it myself and it is just fine.
