10 mV sine wave?

Post by terryrocks »

I do not have a signal/function generator. Can I just play a 10mV sine wave via ipod into my amp for oscope diagnosis?

Sure. In my experience, oscillators for iOS produce decent sine waves, but not triangle or square. Perfectly fine for testing amps.

10 mv. is quite low. If you are wanting to get a signal that is about the same level as a guitar pickup, use 100 mv. That is about a "vintage" pickup level. 150 to 200 mv. is in the range of the hot pickups.

Here's a nice free set:

Plain MP3 players usully put out some 200mV RMS through their headphone out.

Pad down outside as required, do not simply set player volume down because there's a constant background digital noise which gets annoying, while padding pads "everything".
