The PI adds a lot to the tone, but the setup varies with the output tubes you plan to use. As well, the PI is where the NFB is normally applied and this makes a big difference in tone. I take it that you have no presence pot since there is no power amp.

Thank you for the reply! This is a stand alone 2204 preamp that I run into a 20W PP cathode biased power amp with two EL-34s. There is a cut control on the PI section. Also would it benefit to put a master volume after the "PI" on the 2204 preamp?I hope this is enough information. Thanks!

Do you have a schematic of your preamp and power amp? This would help greatly in figuring out your situation. I know what a real 2204 looks like, I just want to see what you got.
