Ocean/Wave sound diagnosis

Post by WORMDIRT »

I just got a broken peavey windsor for crazy cheap ($50) to use as a poor man jcm 800 platform. Its making an crashing waves sound. That is the best way to explain it haha. Before I start getting voltages/checking component values, I wanted to know if there is be a specific problem that this usually relates to (is it ever that simple?)

-Controls have no effect except master volume, which at zero makes it go away.
-Tubes are good
-Nothing looks burnt/destroyed
-Everything has been cleaned
-Solder joints look good

You guys usually help me out pretty quick and with accuracy so yeah, what do you guys suggest?

You've probably got bad plate resistors, cold solder joints, intermittent connections. Excellent donor chassis for JCM 800. Rip that PCB out of there and get to work!

Have you tried playing your amp somewhere other than the beach?

These amps are very mod-friendly. No need to gut. I did one a few months ago and it came out great with minimal fuss. You can do the LTPI on term strips.

Start by process of elimination, which means pulling out the preamp tubes one by one starting with V1 until the problem hopefully stops, than at that point post your findings back to here.

Already done, no changes.
Sound goes away when I plug directly into the effects loop in. Also, the sound swells when I turn the amp off.

Sorry for reviving my dead thread, I haven't had time to even look at this thing in between finals, work, and my main amp going tits up.

Anyway, I swapped all the tubes for known working tubes.
No matter what tube I put into V1, I can here noise when I tap on the tube. So I'm thinking something around there is eff'd

So do you still have the ocean sound?
Some microphonics is normal in any tube when you tap it, and even more so for V1, but even a preamp tube that is badly microphonic ringing may not make a ocean sound!

On V1 Section A and B, I would change out the plate load resistors and both cathode resistors while you are at it, and also change out the power supply dropping resistor for that node, heck it will cost ya less than 4 bucks and be done with it!

Still got the ocean sound
I'm not sure what that would accomplish..

In terms of ridding the amp of the ocean sounds. (Damn that sounds rediculous "ocean sounds haha)
