Judybox amps

Post by xtian »

Judybox amps were made in Austin until 2007, when, I understand, they flamed out. The amps and components have been showing up since then; a couple of members here have mentioned using their chassis and transformers, combo cabs, etc.

I just bought a Revival 12" combo with speaker, chassis, transformers, pots and hardware--no circuit board, no caps, no tubes--for $99 plus shipping on eBay. The seller has a couple more for sale (and has promised to post more soon). I'll give you my impressions of the component quality when it arrives, but I'd love to hear from anyone here about their experiences.

The cab alone is worth more than $99! I'd say it's a real score. Did you get your choice of color? What'd you get?

Looks about the shape & size of Traynor YGM-3 with a snazzy cabinet. Waiting on the report "what's inside."

Congrats. I bought (3) of those a few years back. What a deal. Couldn't be happier with them. Just built one into a Plexi-6V6 combo. Studying a "D" type for the next.

Thanks for posting the PT diagram!

I thought the speaker is 12" in these Revivals. Seller says 10" but I think thats an error. Dave?

Just received mine. I'm glad I got it so cheap, because I got what I paid for. The cabinetry is acceptable, just. Will reserve opinion on the transformers. But everything else is the cheapest crap available on the planet. I'm not naming names, but I will point out the "Made in China" sticker on the back. Compounding that, the soldering job is the worst, drunken monkey--strike that, my monkey can do a way better job. Gobs of cold solder, wires barely tacked to components, janky, wrong, and worse-than-Bubba. The circuit board was clearly clipped out of the chassis as salvage. Good riddance. Every nut and bolt in this thing is the cheapest, undersized, adulterated, zinc coated poo. Including the chassis, which is chrome plated, pitted and oxidizing.

It really is quite an education. I've never seen anything this nasty from Alesis, Behringer, Bugera, Crate, Danelectro, and right down the alphabet. Congratulations, Judybox, you win. No surprise you went out of business. Rated "A" for "Avoid."

Hard to beat the AAA rating us TAG builders achieve.

Some of that ebay crap is scarey.

I picked one of these up yesterday. The remaining stock are here in Austin and the seller is a buddy so he let me sort through what he had, as they were in various states of disarray, and priced differently. There were a couple of unadulterated chassis out of their boxes, so I got to see them up close. Xtians's review may have been too kind. I'll try and leave it at that for now, but this experience even thusfar has really got me thinking about certain aspects of MIC, more than ever before...beyond the mechanical construction of these amps, though I'd be surprised if they even worked.
I ended up getting an amp who's chassis had been stripped as much as possible.
Nonetheless I'm looking forward to the project. I just got done stripping it down, and feel much better. I kept the rectifier socket, as it hadn't been fucked over so badly.

So the amp ran in PP Class A, which I'm a bit unfamiliar with.
PT is 320-265-45-0-265-320 , 150mA , and ran the 265V with 6L6s for "28W". Speaker is 30W and OT is 40W. Valve rectified.

Looking at data sheets for PP Class A, 6L6 calls for 250V plates, which I'm sure was exceeded.

I bring this up, because I'd like to run 6L6s Class AB with cathode bias, but that seems a little risky given the speaker and PT ratings.

What do you guys think? I'd try the Class A , but was this amp really running class A, with what I would assume to be 300V+ on the plates and screens?

I'm starting to lean towards 6V6s at his point. If it weren't for the speaker, I'd be tempted with EL34s. Then again, if the amp wasn't really running Class A, then maybe the PT and speaker are rated very conservatively.

Thoughts?

Smoke: What you got sounds perfect for a 5B6. I suppose if you bias it right you could get it running Class A or nearly A.

Phil, that looks dirty, and I like it. I'm still very shady on how I would accomplish Class A in PP, especially running 300V+ on the 6L6s. How would you bias them?

This amp is gonna be for a specific blues gig I've picked up. I've been running an amp that kinda switches between Merlin's medium gain preamp and the rockerverb, with 6V6s, and it's killin it, but I need to put all this in a combo. Also up for consideration is the Monza, kinda like a Rocket without a tonestack and a variable leak before the PI.

I'm turning mine into a simple blackface combo. Fixed-bias 6V6s, Treble/Bass tone stack, LTP PI. This will be my third or fourth such, and I get a little better each time. Will post more as she progresses.
