OT wiring for combo amp

Post by Smokebreak »

Is there an elegant solution for wiring the OT secondaries to the speaker in say, a 1 x 12" combo without having a speaker out jack? Every scenario I can think of just seems sketchy. The chassis will be inverted and at the top, like this, but without the ext. jack

Use shallow wood screws (so they don't poke through) to mount an L shaped bracket on the side of the cab. Drill the bracket to hold a jack. Wire the jack to the OT. Put a 1/4" phone plug on the speaker. Then you can use any speaker of the proper impedance with the jack, just one at a time.

You can easily remove this and fill the screw holes with putty. No one will notice if you want to restore it.

Yep, and it can be done to look VERY professional. This one is chassis mounted, and fancier than need be, but demonstrates the idea...

Without a jack?
I was just working on a modern fender that the two speaker wires exited the chassis through a strain relief like used for power cords. It looked nice and simple. I'd run the secondarys from the transformer into the chassis through a grommet and loop back out through the strain release.

What do you mean by "ot"?

I know I ask a lot of questions but to not ask is a crime!

I believe he's refering to the Output Transformer secondaries the 4,8, and 16 ohm taps for the speakers.
In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

Indeed! I'm talkin about those output transformer wires that ultimately connect to the speaker(s) one way or another, and the ground reference. Interestingly enough, it's the ground connection I'm obsessing over(for no good reason). I'm just so accustomed to attaching it to a non-insulating jack on the back, as opposed to running it to a (perhaps) more proper ground spot by PI and power ground, THEN running a ground from the speaker back to THAT spot.
Nonetheless, these are 3 good ideas, and I will likely use a combination of them all...though originally I was looking for a jackless and plugless solution that didn't involve direct connection to the speaker. The strain relief works to relieve a bit of apprehension there.
Thanks again,
J

As already mentioned an owner would have to own a soldering iron to change speakers, which is a common mod to cabinets. If it were me I'd be annoyed by this.

Good point. I could use spade terminals in that case.

On a Express combo I ran turret strip for a while but later changed it.

Kendricks 5F6-A Bassman wired the speakers without connectors or jacks.

He had two solder terminals inside the amp that connected the OT secondary

to the speaker wire.

You could do the same; have a rubber grommet to protect the wires going

thru the chassis and use a nylon tie-wrap around the speaker wire inside the

chassis as a strain relief.

Clip on terminals can be OK but never as good as soldering the wires to the speaker.

When I use clips, I smash them down a bit to make sure they:

A) won't fall off

B) and make good contact.

But anything that I know is pretty permanent I solder.

This ^^^is what I ended up doing, except my solder terminals are an ext. speaker jack, as I decided that wasn't a bad idea after all, especially because I used a multitap OT.
