SED Winged C St. Petersburg Stopped Making Receiving Tubes

Post by David Root »

Don't see it anywhere on TAG, just ran across this y'day on the Hoffman forum. Svetlana Electron Devices of St. Petersburg Russia just announced it is going out of the business of making receiving tubes,

This is arguably the best factory left, now apparently history as far as we are concerned. Its other divisions, all industrial, are not affected.

I'm not real hip to the tube manufacturers news, but I thought this happened a while ago?

They were great tubes. I stopped buying them anyways when they almost doubled in price. I have one pair of Winged C EL34's left that I will probably never use now since they are sort of sentimental.

I sure wish I had a never ending supply of their 6550's for bass amps as well. Still, I never bought them based on price ($270 to retube a SVT was just too much).

Depending on which source you want to believe, the "real" Svetlana AKA =C= in USA, stopped making tubes anywhere from 1 to 3 years ago. That is, tubes anybody would use in instrument amps or hi fi gear. :(

There was a warning going around hi fi circles as early as 2008, buy 'em now because this is the end.

Hoffman's very good but perhaps a bit behind on news. I'm on there - and they claim I'm still on tour with a band I left almost 8 years ago. How to correct?

And in further late breaking news, Generalissimo Fransisco Franco . . . is still dead.

Thanks Martin, we must have been simul-typing, and here's the link:

Is this unsold inventory? They are the North American distributor.

tubesandmore = Antique, aka CE distribution, aka Amplified Parts. With so many aliases, I'm expecting to see their mug shot on the Post Office wall one of these days. Don't forget, recently they won't warranty tubes against microphonics so, if you get 'em you're stuck with 'em. Buy at your own risk. I suppose you could return anything for no particular reason as long as you pay the restocking penalty and return freight. Then they sell to someone else, who knows maybe you get the same ones back on the next order, or someone else's duds. Same tubes could be circulating forever. Nightmare scenario.

If they're claiming THE North American distributor, they may have taken on the last tubes that Svetlana made/shipped and that's the end friend.

Keep in mind, Eurotubes at one time made the claim they were the JJ "Authorized US Distributor" but since then I found anyone can buy factory direct from Slovakia. What quality level you'll get, who knows. Lots of claims are made, what they really mean in the end, sometimes a mystery and sometimes not much.

All the trademark lawsuits seemed to involve CE, so I take that to mean their interest is more than that of a stocking distributor. Funny I haven't seen anything from them on the Svetlana receiving tubes news.

CE & New Sensor seem to have patched things up so business can progress.

Smile & sell, sooner or later the =C= will run out. Let's see if New Sensor buys that logo too, just to confuse us all further. I have a feeling it's on Mike Matthews' shopping list.

Not to knock CE too much, I do get a lot of things from them. And most of what I get turns out just fine. Can recommend them.

But it pays to "try" to understand the import tube market. It IS confusing and can't say I have it all 100% straight myself.

Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier and John McCain became a backwards ace.

Amazing.
