Board Stand Offs

Post by Bob S »

Where are you guys getting your stand offs ?
Getting low & need to stock up.
They are expensive nowadays.
Or maybe I'm just a tight old git.

I buy nylon bushings at the local True Value hardware store in the section where they have all the bins with loose screws, nuts, bolts, etc. They come in a variety of lengths with holes for #6, #8, or #10 screws, to suit your preference. They are cheap enough, maybe 20 or 25 cents each.

Bored standoffs? Not at all like the Alamo I guess. :)

Cool you brought those up Phil. I was about to ask what others thought of nylon or similar and even thinking about decoupling from vibrations a bit with more than one spacer and a soft nylon disk or two.

I hate it when my boards are standoffish... :x

+1 for nylons! I get mine from Tube Depot and though they are expensive, they get here real quick. I use quarter and half inch lengths. The quarter length for my circuit boards and half for separate power supply boards.

Then there's Fleabay... Bob...

If you are looking for just a spacer type, check the hobby sections in WalMart and stores like that, or places like hobby lobby or michaels. Go to the bead section. They make these in all sizes and shapes, color, wood metal, plastic, nylon, bone looking etc. You can usually buy a bag of 250 for a few bucks. Enough to last for a few builds.

Thanks guys - much appreciated.
I did think about nylon spacers a while ago.
I have been using stainless m/f 6-32's with a nylon damping washer.
Countersunk screw thru the chassis & a stainless nylock nut holding the board.
Overkill - I'm gonna get me some nylon spacers.
Blackburn - trying to wean myself off fleabay...
Thanks again,
Bob

also if you type in spacer, or standoff you can find the phenolic type and nylon etc.. some phenolic threaded. I'm sure other places have them.
and inexpensive.

I use nylon spacers and stainless screws and nuts.
Also a star washer under the nut.

I use grey plastic water faucet supply tubing. About $1.75 for 30 inches athe HD.
I then get a NEW handy dandy razor in my handle and cut whatever length I need. Works well and and I always have the size I need.
Sometimes you already have the stuff lying around anyway. (Pack rat alert...)
Heavens, an unused PI input !

IMO, 1" is too long. Better to use less than 3/4". IIRC they are cut in standard lengths of 1/8" increments. Also, those are for #6 screws and I like #8. It's a nice price, but not exactly what I'd go for. It's encouraging. Keep looking for something shorter and a little fatter.

Yes. I use Danny Devito.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.
