for reals tho, im pretty new round these parts, figured i would say hi finally

i am almost finished with my A.S. in Electronics Technology here at Sacramento City College. I had the opportunity as an advanced student to design and build a project for entry in the California State Fair. Guess what I chose....

TUBE AMP!!!!

so i wanted it to be something unique, not just another champ or a kit (not that thats not super cool) but i wanted a little more pizazz. i was thinking sub miniature.

short story long, i based my design around a Les Paul Jr. a 1W5 submini pentode makes up the preamp, i added the vol/tone stack from a princeton, solid state rec'd it and redesigned the power supply. A cathode biased 6AQ5 drives a vintage 12" CTS AlNiCo housed in a gutted fender mustang cabinet.

so i soldered it up, tested her out, wrote up the report and sent it to the fair.

as a matter of fact they held the awards ceremony today, i took home: best of show, first place, outstanding project and the parallax donor award.

this is the second year in a row my program at sac city got Best of Show! so uh GO SACRAMENTO CITY COLLEGE!!!

Way back in the mid 70's they told me the transistor would replace all tube devices...

I guess they didn't count on guitarists liking the sound of tubes better than those three legged critters.

That's the same thing they told me in electronics school (early 70's). That is, the head of the department said that he was told to give us the this speach. Then, he said off the record that tubes would never die. The man had vision. He said that solid state and integrated circuits would give us flexibility. But, tubes would continue to give us power and soul to our music. And, this was coming from a retired Army Col.. Of course, he lived and breathed tubes, as he was a Radio Amateur.

We've moved around a bit, but ended up in MA.

i actually meet alot of people from those parts spread all over the country, my generation of kids all made a mass exodus i guess!!
