Marstran transformers ?
I have a home brew thats basically like a jcm800 from the tonestack to the output aside from some simple tweaks. Pre is more of very modded sorta 800. I have tried 3 OT's in it. A classictone 800 style, a 4k/50w heyboer i had wound for me, and a hammond who's model i believe was a 1750n. All were close enough that i could have been happy with any one, tho i felt the heyboer traded fullness for a bit extra sweetness in the top. I ended up keeping the classictone in it after many swaps.
Question is, i keep hearing how good these marstrans are and i wonder if it is in another league and would be very noticeably better than any of the one's i've tried. Thoughts?

Re: Marstran transformers ?
I've used Marstran with good sucess in Marshall builds. Everythough, they are made by Heyboer as well, they are very accurate to the original models, as are Chris Merrens which I have also used. I think MCI is a great value for the money and I use MCI output iron from time to time, but my first personal choices are Marstran and Merren.
Your ear, is your ear.... I can't say whether you should try them or not, if you are happy with MCI then perhaps there's no reason to change.

What you are searching for is drake iron. That is the golden iron of Marshall.
It can still be found in UK for about the cost of specialty iron.

Brian Wallace has torn down as many 50w OTs as anyone I know of. His stuff is great. I have two orginal amps with his replacements. Very good.
I use all MC iron in my builds.
Swapping OT is a whole lot of work if you already have something that kicks ass. 1 more OT and you could have had a whole new amp..

I assume brian is marstran? if so, and you love his trannys that much, why do you use MC in all your builds? And how the 2 compare in your opinion?Reeltarded wrote:Brian Wallace has torn down as many 50w OTs as anyone I know of. His stuff is great. I have two orginal amps with his replacements. Very good.

Re: Marstran transformers ?
A whole set of MC costs less than an OT from Marstran. Either rig can be a screaming terror.

Re: Marstran transformers ?
Dat be true. But PT and choke aside, do you think marstran OT vs MC OT is subtle enough that it doesn't matter much or that the differences are so subjective that many would probably be torn or even prefer the MC?

Re: Marstran transformers ?
There is no easy way to answer this without being an asshole.
Brian is a nice guy, friendly to me, and he did more leg work than any other individual to know what a 50w Marshall transformer is supposed to be.
Your idea of scooped mids might sound like increased bass and treble response to me. Subjective. Worth $200 to find out? Not my call.
I would rather build another amp.

Re: Marstran transformers ?
If I'm building a museum piece and it absolutely has to be dead on, I'd use Marstran.
If I'm building something I know I will end up tweaking away from the original that inspired it, MC is fine.
