I'm ready for a Grade on my First Recap

Post by Jerry2013 »

This Bassmate Traynor already had a three prong cord. All I had to do was determine cap values, check and recheck values and polarity, twist the Caps onto the old leads, and solder.
There were a few I had to solder right onto the eyelets.
I also mounted a pair of the filter caps onto a board and siliconed them , and a few others. The Silicone isn't quite gelled yet.
Guess I might wait and bring it up slowly on a Variac. Plus I need to replace the crappy speaker lead with a nice new bigger gauge one, and locate a 15" Jensen speaker.
This could be a great practice amp.;

..and heres the Bassmaster YBA-1a. REcap is done, and I *am going to take it to a Amp tech to install the three prong cord, and put in screen resistors.;

You did the hard work, made the amp road worthy and now you're going to take the amp to the tech to install a three prong cable?

Come on Jerry, you have already proven you can change the cable!

Congrats!
Horacio

Jerry, I'm with Horacio on this. If you can do a cap job, you can do the 3-prong cord and a lot of other stuff. Just plan it out carefully. Then work your plan. C'mon, get on with it. You can post pictures of your work if you aren't sure about it. You might get a bit of well meant abuse with it, but it is better than taking it to a tech and telling him you did a cap job but can't do the power cord. Then you are likely to receive some real abuse or maybe he will be so polite, his efforts to hold back the laughter will give him a hernia.

Jerry the bassmate should be fine with 450 E-cap, but the other amp is'nt that a el34 job? did you check plate voltages? I''d think you might want 600v caps in that. but i could be wrong

I was going with the stock cap voltages. Son of a darn, wished I woulda put 600V caps- wouldnt of hurt. I think The BASSMASTER IS going to a tech, and let him put the three prong cord, check everything out,, and let him install screen grids ( Im studying which grids , and think Dakle 1k5W wirewounds made for marshall are the best bet so far) .
The Bassmate is done and will be fired up soon as i get a nice 50 watt Jensen 15" speaker,.

I'd stay away from silicon - unless you using the non-corrosive type.

I use a glue gun - but the high voltage lab I work in has dissallowed glue guns as well, prolly for the same reason.

knowledge is power - learn away!
it really is a journey, and you just cant farm out the battle wounds

I would not use hot-melt glue, as things can get pretty warm inside tube gear. Silicone is ok for damping vibration, and any type will likely do fine as long as it is not being used on leads or soldered joints. I would not use it as the sole means of mounting components, though. In a case like the above, a better solution would be to install a couple of terminal strips to mechanically support the caps. If a circuit board is used, it should have eyelets or turrets to mount the caps and solder leads to, and it should be attached to the chassis with screws.

When I replaced the main filter on YBA-2B I used the existing holes to mount a new cap board, worked out nicely incase someone later wanted to fine a more original style cap.

I use GE Silicone II, which can be found at Home Depot and does not contain ascetic acid. It's cheap and does not smell as bad, however I wouldn't worry about regular silicone with ascetic acid. It's only corrosive in the drying stage when the acid is leeching off. This is problematic in a sealed environment. Typically, a guitar amp is not really 'sealed', and the chassis open when the silicone is drying.
