Plug & Tweak

Post by VacuumVoodoo »

This is my approach to making amps on PCBs a little easier to tweak. When done I secure the components with a small drop of glue.
Hope some of you may find it useful.

Maybe I'm a little slow this morning, but I don't get it.

To me it looks like you have IC sockets or other type of socket that the box caps can slide into held in place with glue when done tweaking. (above R27 and another on the right side).

He's using what look like 0.1" center sockets. These sockets have a standard opening size that normally match nicely with component leads. You just insert the component leads into the socket openings. Easily swappable. Glue them down for 'permanent' installation when you have decided what value you like best. Been done on PCBs for many, many years. This PCB just happens to be in a guitar amp. Of course, all the magic is lost when you use a PCB in a guitar amp!!! :P

Correct. DIL IC sockets. For stationary use the caps will stay in the sockets without problems. If the amp is to go on the road then securing the caps with glue is recommended.
Ah yes, I use special white magic glue to offset PCB magic killing properties

Oh, MAN, that's fine-tastic.

What's the trimmer on V1?

That's a heater hum cancellation trimmer, the wiper is on DC offset. It's on V1 because that's where sensitivity to any hum and overlayed rectification spikes is highest. This way, even when dimed all you'll hear is white noise but no hum or buzz. DC offset on heaters is for the sake of cathode followers and phase inverter o keep heater to cathode voltage difference below allowed max.

Nice idea for those Wima caps.

I have used them before in pedals but not amps due to the short leads.

Socket makes sense, quick change presto! :D

I do this same thing in pedals.

Aleks that amp looks fantastic inside (and probably outside too) :).

I just solder some extra leads on them:

It's probably not 100% as mechanically reliable as other caps, but definitely good enough, IMO.
