Selecting resistors for simple audio amplifier

Post by hithit »

I'm looking at selecting resistor for my simple audio amplifier project i'm building, but i'm not sure what type of resistors to use, I already found quite some information about resistor types, however i'm still not quite sure which to choose. Metal film seem the best choice at this moment. Can somebody give advice?

Hi

What type of audio amp?

Hifi or guitar amp?

Metal film are precision but they can be sterile sounding.

Guitar amps are tone generators. Carbon film and carbon comp are commonly used.

But to each his own.

I going to build a hifi amp. Thanks for your help. I think carbon composition or carbon film is a good option for me.

MF everywhere and CF for width then.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.

Never built a dedicated hifi amp, but I'll keep this in mind!

I can see using carbon comp in a guitar amp, but only in select positions where you're shooting for some extra second harmonic distortion:

I don't think they have any place in a hifi amp.

Noise masks the crappy reality in recordings vanish, for instance I can't bear to listen to anything Led Zeppelin recorded, but it used to sound great.

If you are a Zeppelin fan* go for the CC.

(who still listens)

Someone call my name :?: :)

I would use 1 watt MF resistors.

I still haven't got my carbon comps do to the the pre-echo tape bleed, "woman....WOMAN...."

$20 a piece Mark Fowler resistors. Best. Tone. Evar. But if you're looking for a funkier tone go with the $30 a piece Mark Farner resistors.

No, I am not joking about the sonics on Zeppelin records. Compare contemporary recordings on vinyl and a fair playback rig. :)

Carbon film resistors are kind of interesting. I actually hear differences in them besides smear, roar, and roll off whereas CC is varied levels of roar in the good stuff and all smear in the worst case. Good stuff!
