Hi fi stereo amp

Post by trane34 »

Anyone here mess with tube hi fi amps? Any kits or resources you could recommend? Hogy posted a cool thread on tgp about reamping with a tube hi fi amp. He said this was a good way to get the loud amps cooking while keeping the volume down. Since i am moving soon to an apartment i could use a low volume solution that sounds and still feels good.

Check out the tube forum on diyaudio, the place is a haven for hifi and the community is very helpful and friendly. It's a gold mine of information.

A pair of Fisher 80-AZ monos running EL-37's that I'm currently using.
I also have a pair of Mk III that I've redone with Posiedon boards.

Thanks invertiguy I will check that forum out.

Cantplay thanks for posting. Looks like you have some experience with these things. What stereo amp would you recommend for low volume reamping? Not sure I would go with the dual monobloc because they look to be more expensive and I plan on putting the amp in my rack.

It depends on the speakers you need to drive.

Thats the setup in the living room driving a large pair of ineffecient speakers.

In the bedroom I'm driving an 8" pair of single drivers nearly 100dB effecient. That has an EL-84 single ended triode running under 1 watt. It can go louder Than you'd need.

The smaller and simpler the amp is the more detailed the sound will be.

See if you can borrow a low powered SET amp to try.

For an apartment-zised amp, try a Dyna ST35 kit from Dynakits or Triode Electronics.

I built a single ended triode amp using 2 sv83's and a 6n1p.
It sounds great but my speakers are only rated at about 94db.
I built it to run my computer audio.

What are the speakers that are rated at 100db?

I used to have a pair of A7's but they were a little large for my bookshelf. :D

Self recommendation is no recommendation at all - mostly. But NO B.S. this amp is the best thing I've ever heard. Doesn't go as loud as many tube HiFi amps but kicks butt sound quality wise. Pace, Rythym, Attack, Stereo Imaging all good - due to all local feedback and no global feedback.

Here is my HiFi Amp design. There is a humungous thread on it over at DIY Audio - Search for "Baby Huey". I use the same name "Gingertube" there.

12AX7 and EL84 Ultralinear + Balance Shunt Feedback. 10 Watts per Channel.

I'm currently running an octal version using 6SL7 and 6V6 in my lounge room. Schematic for it is on that thread too but it is much the same as what I posted here.

Cheers,
Ian
