5e3 problem - low output!

Post by ben85 »

hi!
i'm another one guy that have the same problem, but i couldn't find an answer,so i decided to post.so,
i order and built a 5e3 amp from weber.although everything seems to be ok,the output volume is very low.the pilot light is on,the tubes are lit,the potentiometers work fine and it sounds clean and nice, not any distortion and not loud.it's just in the same level of my speech.moreover, refering to weber's schematic - https://taweber.powweb.com/store/5e3_schem.jpg - after rating,i found out 353V at "A", 319V at "B" and 248 at "C".Also, 174v at pin 1 and 166v at pin 6 at the 12AX7B tube plate (instead of 12AY), 162v at pin 1 and 202v at pin 6 at the another 12AX7B tube plate and 346v at pin 5 at both 6V6GT tube plates.are these reasonable rates?i rated with the tubes on.the speaker and the tubes are in excellent condition.i've triple checked them in other amps
any ideas what it could be?
thank you!

Pin 5 on a 6V6 is not the plate, pin 3 is the plate. Could this be your problem or maybe a typo?

There should be high DC on pins 3 and 4 of each 6V6; not on pin 5. Did you mistype or miswire?

Well at this point I'd say you may have bad 6v6s, because it looks like you powered it up without a speaker load.......I could be wrong.

Generally you need a load of some kind on BOTH windings of the OT.

Someone will chime-in with better answers tho.

i suspect you have some soldering issues. i would go through and re-solder so that it flows out and covers the eyelets. there is some youtube videos on proper soldering techniques.

Yes that is what I noticed right away.

The solder joints are not right.

What kind of solder and iron did you use?

Those are called cold solder joints and will not conduct well.

It may not be the issue that is causing the problem but the first thing would be to re-flow those solder joints so they look smooth and shiny.

You should fill the eyelet with solder.

Check your grounds with an ohmmeter.

Black probe to chassis ground and red probe to eyelets that are grounded.

Here is a good example of proper solder joints courtesy of UltraHookedOnPhonix.
