Tube rectifiers; let's argue.

Post by Reeltarded »

Tube rectifiers are an expense waiting to cost you 1. the price of a tube 2. a night at a gig and possibly 3. the use of a key amp in your recording session.

When you build an amp with a tube rectifier you are costing the user $30+ up front, a lifetime of worry, and in worst cases a job.

I can think of one thing good, but I am the Devil in this trial.

Persecute the tubeatic.

Put some diodes and a fuse in series with each HV winding going to the tube recto and you are pretty safe.

They do not play a huge factor in tone imo but like any great amp it is not one single component that makes the difference but many small components/factors put together.

I played gigs 5x week for many years and serviced my own amps, going through all kinds of different rigs for different occasions, new sounds, etc. During that time, I often subbed diodes for the tube rectifier. Most amps benefit with tighter low end, a bit more headroom, and much better reliability. That said, some amps just didn't seem to play well with the SS rectifier, and I would re-install the tube. My impression is that a SS rectifier is a good choice for many designs.

Is there an implication that rectifier tubes fail more often than power tubes?

Not if they're Mullard GZ34s.

I stopped using tube rectifiers ( actually called valve rectifiers in my little corner of the universe ) in 1972, and I haven't been shown any convincing reason to return to them. They probably only still exist for the audiophiles and guitarists who listen with their eyes.

. . . and I don't like turtles either.

You can say that again!

Tubes don't just fail because they wear out. Rectifier tubes seem to not travel as well as diodes. :)

I mean :P

85% so far.

No, I am the devil and you are just my pawn!

Tube rectifiers are so good, you should put two in every amp!

Because everyone loves saying "Dual Rectum Fryer."

And all your amps should be named "Messy Booger."

Jim Marshall messed up a perfectly good Bassman.

SRV, Robin Trower, and Frank Marino are just bad copies of Jimi Hendrix.

John Mayer is a douchbag guitarist.

Oh wait, no one will argue that last point.
