Celestion G12M Greenback wattage?
Has anyone run into this? I bought a couple of Celestion G12M Greenbacks in the last year or so but here's the deal.
The specs on the site where I got it show 25 watts, and a picture there of the back of the speaker also shows it saying 25 watts. But what I got says 20 watts?! What's up with that?
I have a friend in Ca. that just got the same 20 watt "Greenback", from a different source.
Anybody know anything about this?

They do make a repro of the pre Rola 20 watt G12M 75 Hz greenback. I thought its use was limited to the Marshall 1974x (18watt combo and extension cab). I've got one and it's a fine speaker comparing very well with the genuine 1968 pre Rola G12M's I have. Annoyingly, it doesn't have a code on the steel chassis only a cone code which on mine is 28 11914.
Celestion have always been noted for being conservative with their wattage ratings, unlike a lot of other big name speaker manufacturers. Would I couple two of these in a "30 watt" BluesBreaker ... yes and probably get away with it. Put two of these with a 40 or 50 watt amp ... no, probably not.

Hah must be the new year .... Just checked here and Celestion market it as their Heritage G12M. In the UK these are a lot more expensive (50%) than the standard G12M, so you may have got a bargain, though perhaps not if you wanted a 25 watt rated speaker.

Yup the 20Wer is the heritage version made in Ipswich.
I have the 20Wer and some (made in China) 25Wers, and the 20Wer definitely sounds nicer than the 25Wer.

Well, the box mine came in said made in China, so I doubt they're from Ipswich. And mine are not the Heritage model; mine have black frames. They don't sound bad but I need 25 watts. If they say it's going to be a 25 watt speaker, it should be 25 watts.

Maybe nowadays they're making the 20Wer in China too dammit. My one definitely says 'Made in Ipswich', but I got it about 4 years ago.

Okay, I was mistaken. The frames on mine are grey, not black. But they are certainly not Heritage. I looked at the Heritage model online and they are ostensibly 30 watts. But then the speakers I got said they were 25 watts, so who knows?
Really. Does anyone know about these 20 watt Greenbacks?

Re: Celestion G12M Greenback wattage?
I know that they are probably marked 20 but actually 25 watts, just like the 65/66/67s that were 20 watts until they decided to mark them as 25s, just backwards.
I bet it has more to do with marketing and not selling the British speakers as much anymore since the Chinese made speakers used to look just like the British speakers on YouTube.
"Oh, you have the grey frame Chinese 20s.."..

They definitely did a heritage model in 20W (around about 4 years ago when I bought mine - and it really does say 'Made in Ipswich')sepulchre wrote:Okay, I was mistaken. The new CreamBack is freaking awesome! That would fit the bill for you.sepulchre wrote:Well, the box mine came in said made in China, so I doubt they're from Ipswich. Funny enough too is I prefer the Chinese G12M over the heritage greenback.
The Creamback is my new favorite though

I discovered that the Heritage say 20 watts but they are actually 25 watt speakers. Celestion wanted them to look vintage. The old ones had "20 watts" on them.
