Any low profile transformers for 1U rackmounting?

Post by Bear »

I want to build a little 6005w power amp to go with my Boogie Quad preamp. The Quad is a beast, but my power needs are low so a small power amp would be nice.

Horizontally mounting the sockets could make small bottle power tubes work dandy in a 1U rack case. The hitch is that most of the conventional iron, even for lower powered amps, is a bit too big to fit. The only stuff I'm aware of is replacement iron from the Boogie 20/20, and at the pricing I've seen I might as well hunt down one of those amps used. Torroidal power might be necessary unless anyone has a better answer. Any ideas for output iron?

I have heard good things about the Antek toroidal power transformers but have not used one myself. From what I understand, they are perfect for preamps and effects but I am not sure what they would sound like in a power amp.

I've used a few Antek PT jobs with great results. I've built a few different amps with the "Express" PT (2T300 or something) and I used a 400-0-400V@1A (6.3V@10A) PT on the bass amp I built. I love their stuff and for the price, you can't beat them. You get more VA per dollar than anybody else currently offers unless you buy old PT's off of eBay and repurpose them (but this is not typically a size-friendly endeavor).

For the output transformer, you definitely need an R-core transformer to meet your size requirements. They are much smaller (shorter) for the current density capabilities they can handle. They also don't emit any appreciable noise and are less susceptible to stray flux from, say, a massive PT handling large currents. An R-core OT with a toroidal PT would be a very low-noise solution and should fit fine in a 1U case with some engineering.

There's Plitron too, they've been making hifi tube output toroids, along with toroid PTs for tube kit for a long time. Not sure if they'll fit a one U but they have detailed spec sheets of everything. Here's the OTs.

Holy schnikes that stuff's expensive. I could build the whole amp at 2U for the cost of one of those OT's and maybe find a deal on an ABS rack for it and the Quad. Maybe this is part of why there aren't more 1u tube power amps.

Check out those Antek toroids.

For example here is a dual 300v, 6.3v @ 4A for $38.50

That Antek PT is nice, but almost an inch too tall.

I think they do have one that is 1.6" tall.
You might have to modify the mounting, to fit in an 1.75 rack case.

Maybe a couple small flat pack transformers such as those from Hammond and triad. A 120/120 with a voltage doubler for the HV and a small 120/6.3v for the heaters.

No further progress on this other then drilling and painting chassis, 2" high Hammond chassis.

There are some sellers on ebay of 7 pin tube sockets with the correct size of tube retainers if you are need of sockets, i was able to use a 12ax7 tube retainer and get it to work with the 7 pin sockets i already had.

dave

edit;should add the three transformers totalled 30-$35.

London Power has a 1u power supply:

Looking at their SE power amp offerings, it doesn't seem to give any dimensions for height.

Yeah, that is a bit pricey. But it's Canadian dollars, you just have to wait for a favorable exchange rate. :-)
