Interesting--no twisting of heater wires.
I build and repair tube amps. http://amps.monkeymatic.com

Maybe they are DC powered - it's hard to tell from the pics.xtian wrote:Interesting--no twisting of heater wires.

Re: Maz 38 pics
Doc uses special coated chassis and in most of his builds the heater wires are not twisted just very lazy loop. Not DC.
Re: Maz 38 pics
He mentioned in the Tone Quest interview the chassis had a chromate conversion. To my knowledge, the prevents corrosion making ground connections more reliable over time.
Fowler, you're not say that the chassis has anything to do with the untwisted wires, are you? I think they probably made one amp with them twisted, and one without, then compared the two for noise levels. Just a hunch, but could save a lot a labor. Maybe Mr. Z will chime in.

Re: Maz 38 pics
Sure the chassis material affects the shielding and with high amperage of the filament supply it may have an affect.

Reading Tone Quest Report again shows Doc used the special chassis coating for grounding.
Bob yeah you have to use the correct wire or else

Re: Maz 38 pics
We all take great care to make our heater wires twisted pairs nice and tight, then I asked myself how PCB heater traces are not twisted, yet they work well. I am to think there must be a set of guidelines one must follow when placing them on the boards (away from grids, etc., I would assume) interesting topic.
On the same subject, we use 18 or even 16 gauge wires to handle the heater load, yet the thickness of the heater traces that I have seen do not seem to have the equivalent metal thickness of a 22 or even a 24 gauge wire. Your thoughts?
Merry Christmas to all.

Re: Maz 38 pics
I have done heater wires heat shrinked together straight and untwisted. It is very neat and very quiet.
Re: Maz 38 pics
Thank you Brew.
I'm guessing here; apparently as long as the wires run parallel and close together you can still get the 60 cycles to cancel each other.
I am going to experiment myself as twisting heater wires is the job I like the least about amp building.
Thanks, again.

Re: Maz 38 pics
It's funny how everyone talks about how ideal zip cord would be for heaters, but I've never seen anyone use it. I suppose no one wants 'lamp cord' in their amps, and I don't blame them
Re: Maz 38 pics
I've always wondered about twisted wire.
Tight twists means 2-3x more wire.
More of what causes the problem in the first place.
Must be more complicated than I can understand.
Then I look at the lazy twist Ken used for TW's.
Hmm...

My Dr Z Stangray has the same very loose nontwisted filament wiring and that amp operates very quiet but is a sonic loud MoFo.
