Guitar amp from a magnavox turntable

Post by DFMoore »

I came across an old phonograph player today while cleaning out my mom's house. A Magnavox Stereo 1964566. It has 1 12AX7 and 2 50EH5. thinking about turning it into a guitar amp. Thoughts??

Sure you can, but you are gonna need another gain stage to raise uo the signal.

I was not familiar with that power tube so I looked it up.

50v heater voltage. Does this amp have a power transformer?

The 50EH5 is only a 5 watt power tube, miniature 7 pin.

Do you have a model number of the phonograph?

Run away! The radios got away with it cause they had Bakelite or wood cases and knobs and no one was attached to the chassis via a set of guitar strings and a cord!!!

I saw a guitar conversion someone made once, sounded nice, but I ran away.

Tom,

The model number on the phonograph is 1964566. The amp does not have a power transformer.

Yeah that is what I suspected.

I remember an old radio my late grandmother had in her basement she would use when she did the laundry.
If it was plugged in the wrong way you would get a hell of a shock when you touched it.

If you decide to do something with it you will need to use a isolation transformer and a three prong cord.

An isolation transformer is one with a 1:1 ration so the voltage is the same but it protects the user from a hot chassis.
