Tweed Tone Control Simulation

Post by printer2 »

Doing the rounds. Probably a little off but should be in the ballpark. Set some of the values to null out the bass circuit in the James section of the Duncan Tone Stack Calculator. The bass control acts as the volume and the treble as the tone. Make C3 relatively large and you have a normal tone cut circuit.

Make R4 10M. You have Bass pot 1M effectively in parallel with R5 which mimics a Volume pot at max.

Not sure if I follow. With R4 equal to 1 ohm the bass pot wiper is on the 1M load resistor. R1, R3, C1, C2 and R4 are effectively out of the circuit.

This gives you R2, the bass control, to act as a regular volume control. You can turn it up to 100% or down to 0% like a regular volume control.

This is what Bass pot stepped 0 to 10 does in your circuit when Treble is at 5 i.e. set for flat frequency response.
I can't really call it a volume control. It would be usable if the function was reversed, producing bass boost at low volume settings instead. It would be sort of loudness compensation.

But does the response of the tone control not depend on the setting of the volume in a real amp?

No. But response of our ears does depend on volume.
