whats the best Hiwatt clone?
So who makes the best Hiwatt clone to build? I'm not necesary looking for a 100w clone but maybe one with less watts, if I can find one of 20w or 30w would be great!

Re: whats the best Hiwatt clone?
I forgot to say that I want it to have EL34s, alltough 2xEL34 normally give 50w of power.
Re: whats the best Hiwatt clone?
For the low powered Hiwatt I only know of one the Trinity Triwatt amp running a pair of 6v6s.

Re: whats the best Hiwatt clone?
I imagine the Trinity Amps Triwatt could be re-biased for EL34's easily enough. I can vouch for Trinity Amps - I bought one of their 5E3 kits a few years ago and I love it. Got a tweed cab and a Tone Tubby Alnico Hempcone speaker for it on ebay and this amp sounds absolutely marvelous. Stephen @ Trinity is knowledgable and friendly, and I am sure he'd be happy to talk to you about substituting EL34's for the 6L6's. I am pretty sure the OT will work for both tubes.

Re: whats the best Hiwatt clone?
I second the Trinity Triwatt. Built one and it is still my main amp. I run it with KT66's, but the PT is beefy enough to use EL34's. It has a massive clean sound that is a perfect platform for pedals. Can also get some nice overdrive tones as well.

Our very own Mark Huss is a principal in the Vintage Restoration company that I linked to before. If you don't know Mark, check out his website (http://hiwatt.org). He is Mr. HiWatt in my book. I am sure that the amps and kits that Vintage Restoration provides are as good as it gets.

Re: whats the best Hiwatt clone?
Im doing research on Hiwatts on the basis of Gilmour tones and I just notice something and that is that he just used the power amp section of his Hiwatts and went thru a Alembic F-2B as his main preamp... this is an interesting concept for developing a hibrid amp...
Re: whats the best Hiwatt clone?
Simple, build it to be able to run EL34's but run 6V6's most of the time.
Then you can run 20 watts with 6V6, 40 watts with 6L6, and 50 watts with EL34's.
Just use the proper power transformer and a 50w output transformer.
Check out the Tramp kit, it sounds exactly like what you want.

Re: whats the best Hiwatt clone?
I posted the Triwatt because the OP wanted a lower powered Hiwatt otherwise I would have suggested the DR103 or DR504 from http://www.vintagehiwattrestorations.com/ which is where I got some of my parts for a DR103.
Re: whats the best Hiwatt clone?
Hi-Tone (the VHR people) offers two models that are switchable between 30 and 15 watts.

I built a DR201 from scratch using transformers from TAD in Germany, the 6xEL34 version. I use it for bass and it sounds great !

OK, bb5000, let me be the first to say....OMG! The bias system is the most elaborate setup I have ever seen, speakons out, four fuses... That's approaching insanity, watch your coffee intake.
Most people stall out when fixing a mistake that they've made. Why?
Re: whats the best Hiwatt clone?
I love the little LCD meter on the back.
I have one of those that I ordered from China that I intended on putting in a build.
Not brave enough to cut a hole in my ODS clone.

Weber uses that bias meter system in their 200w amp kits as an option.
