Help restoring old RCA tube caddy

Post by fathersson »

Hello,

My father is very into tube amps. At a yard sale I picked up an old RCA tube caddy. Before I give it to him as a gift, I want to clean it up some. The actual cleaning won't be an issue, but I have a question as to a few of the stickers/marks on it if anyone can help.

First, the caddy itself. The various documentation inside is dated in the '69 to '72 time frame.

These "Inspected by" and "Made in USA" stickers were floating around the bottom of the caddy. Would this have come off the inside of the caddy, and if so, where were they usually placed?

The main compartment and two side compartments each have a number written in what appears to be crayon, grease pen, or similar. Would this have been done at the factory or did someone scribble this in later?

Main compartment:

Thanks for any info you all can provide! I really appreciate it!

I can't help you with cleaning it up but I am curious to hear what others say. I have a very similar tube caddy that my son bought me last year for father's day. Enjoy!

Yes, it had several dozen tubes in it. However, i think only about one of them is an amp tube.

Sorry I wrote up a reply and forgot to click send yesterday right after I saw this thread.

I've found the same "inspected by" tag in a tube caddy before. I've been the first to open many RCA related products in the past and have seen these tags in a few other places, most memorable being a box of five 12AX7's that had this label in the bottom. What I can say is that IME neither one of these tags were in any way glued or held into the carriers, they were just floating in the bottom. I've never seen the "textile" one but I've seen the "inspected by" tag in a few places.

I don't recall seeing the numbers but it wouldn't surprise me one bit if the manufacturer cut hundreds or more of the same shape at a time and labelled different sections with the same number if they all fit together.. It's up to you whether to leave it but it's probably fine as is.
