Tolex on tolex ok?

Post by LarryLarry »

Any reason not to put new tolex over the old tolex as long as the old tolex is in tact?

I think it's similar to new wall paper over old, or new vinyl floor over old. The old will telegraph any imperfections and texture and it will show through the old. I'd also have concerns about getting the corners right, and how well the adhesive will hold. I'm certainly no expert, but I think the better path is to strip the old tolex and short of that to somehow encapsulate the old tolex (maybe in polyurthane or something like that) to make it hard and smooth. Before going to that much trouble, it is probably not much more work to strip it.

I think you are right on Phil. Might take an extra hour to strip and sand it, but probably make the end result a lot better...

I think you made the best decision... you could do it over the old tolex, but you would end up taking it all off and starting over again... I seriously doubt the glue would hold on the old tolex...

Yeah, it's going to be like any surfacing technique. Take painting, the actual applying of the paint is the easy part. Proper preparation is the most important and exhaustive part, but will result in a long lasting and great looking end product. And yes, I would be really concerned the glue wouldn't hold properly.

In my experience, there is rarely such thing called a "shortcut." Shortcut is usually another name for something that takes longer than it should.

I think its going to be challenging to say the least. If you get a heat gun you may be able to strip that cab pretty easily. Cut the tolex into sections and remove pieces at a time. Some cabs are real stubborn, and if you happen to be dealing with any sort of particle board its never a good time.

Don't be shy with the heat. You might find that cab is stripped to bare wood faster than you ever thought possible!

As suggested sanding always is a good in between

Too thick and it won't stick well. Don't do it.
