I might want to do a Hiwatt sooner than later. Any advice?

Like what? They kick ass. Tremendous AC30 without all the combo flub. Big and bright!

Ever heard Ulrich Roth from the Scorpion days? That is also Hiwawts! That guy is trancendant... Was trancendant, then he trancended. I don't get him at all.

Wish you were in Utah to play through mine, have a one of a kind DR504-ish by Toad Suck Tones that uses a pair of Bendix 6384's for the power tubes. All NOS tubes in it. Cleans remind me of a Steinway Piano they are so sweet and detailed. Gorgeous eyelet board build.

What is the "go to" HiWatt? Or, the HiWatt 'grail tone'?

I'm leaning towards a DR103. Though I have thought about doing something Gilmour did later own, which is a modded Alembic f2b preamp (really a Dual Showman) into the power amp of the Hiwatt.

I think for earlier Gilmour tones, he just linked the two inputs.

Which would basically give you the ModernVintage Tone Monster add master volume. Great amp! very produced tone, naturally compresses tight and focused, with strong lows and focused mids, crispy but not brittle high end. It layers well and cuts nicely. I find it likes hotter humbuckers and takes lite boost and driver pedals on the front end well to bring it to a modern rock tone. without out a front end boost it gives a solid late 70's tone.

These are the go to Hiwatt amps

Hiwatt 1973 DR103, Hiwatt Custom 100 - Traditionally these two are the amps you think of when you hear Hiwatt

Hiwatt DR504 - is the 50Watt little brother

Hiwatt 1989 D50L - by this time it's only really a hiwatt by name. the circuit has been modified to produce a swooped lead tone. PCB construction, cheap parts, 80's build quality... very similar to the Lee Jackson Ampeg lead head.

All about the 103, it's the one you expect.

One of my first builds was a Trinity Triwatt. DR103-styled preamp tied to a 6V6 based poweramp. It did the Hiwatt thing at a far more sane volume level. As has been said, they're bright (but not in a bad way - I find Marshalls to have more "peaky" stuff going on) and tight. Fabulous rock and roll amps.

I've been in the same room as a DR103 wound up to 10 - I think I felt it rearrange my DNA.

I agree they are bright. The partridge transformers are smoother then the New production iron. NOS tubes help a lot. I hate the brittle top end of new production tubes in the DR103 and Custom100. It's one of the amps you gain a lot from running the OEM tubes in. Mullard and Partridge all the way!

Any source for Partridge clone transformers? I read the Mark Huss article where he used Heybour. I assume they were spec'd from originals?

it's a great grab and get pretty close kit.

IMHO I'd source different Iron and tone caps. If I didn't want to trouble with NOS mustards i'd go SOZO.
