5150 Van Halen Combo

Post by sabredude »

I'm working on a 5150 Van Halen combo that my customer is not pleased with the bass response. I've looked at the schematic as well as his tube compliment (all JJ's) and I'm not sure why the lack of bass. I do see some bypass caps that are doing in the neighborhood ot 100hz but that doesn't seem t be enough. Any ideas? anybody mod'd one of these? I like the sound other than the noise level and lack of clean but it is a little like an ice pick. It would sound great from about 50 feet away!
I have demo'd some of my Mod'd JCM 800's and he really likes those (and htey ahve a ton more bass) so I know that he understand amp tones. I've never played on a 5150 VH combo before and I don't want to fix an amp that is intentionally sounding this way. I don't see the purpose in making a 5150 sound like a JCM 800... Thoughts?

First version? No lows? Is he used to a dual rec or something? I had a couple of those amps. I think they are flub machines!

Rework the cathode bypass on the first stage brighter, but make the second stage .1uf coupler just like you would on a 4 holer... err like I would.
Signatures have a 255 character limit that I could abuse, but I am not Cecil B. DeMille.
