Pine speaker cab, holy moly.

I recently did a speaker shootout (all using a single EVM12L). I purchased a 1x12 all pine cabinet from this guy:

Just some background, I grew up playing mostly open-backed combos, so I've always had the dilemma of liking the bass response of closed-back cabinets, but always felt like something was missing in the ambience department.

All I can say is this cab seems to exhibit the best qualities of open back and closed back designs. The cab seems to radiate well and isn't beamy, but has a rich and well rounded bottom end. It has a three panel back for various open-back configurations, but honestly I can't get over how good it sounds as a closed back.

The one I bought was Model # PW112U 25"wide x 16"tall x 11" deep.

I have no affiliation with this guy, I'm just very happy with my purchase. I got the cab off ebay for around $150 with free shipping.

Fender used pine in the 50s for the tweed amps. I had a 59 5F6-A bassman which sounded amazing. The cabinet was killed in a bizarre roadie accident and I used it as a head into a cab built from particle board. Sounded like junk, really brittle.

Yep, pine sounds great. I have 2 combo amps in pine cabs, both sound great.

Pine is very warm sounding.

I did a pine cab for myself, I could hear it 'sing' as I sanded it.

Oh, I forgot to add:

With pine you should do at least 1 coat of whatever finish you use to the inside of the cab as well. Otherwise as humidity changes the wood will tend to warp and may try to split or distort.

I like amber shellac for pine, I've tried stains, and because pine is so soft it ends up very blotchy.

I have a 56 4-10 Fender Bassman that the previous owner had recovered in Peavy vinyl Tweed.
It really looked like crap and the sound was kind of uninspiring.
I decided to have it recovered and get all of the joints re-glued.

WOW! What a difference. I guess re-gluing the joints had a profound effect on the sound of that amp. I'm pretty sure that it wasn't the tweed that made the difference.
It turned the amp into a keeper.

I have an all pine Dumble style 2x12 cab with G12-65s. I love that thing.

Voila my custom pine combo cab from Mather, finished in tung oil. I nearly fainted when I saw it for the first time, they do amazing work! Pretty scratchable though, definitely more suitable for studio than van/roadie abuse.

The old Fender cabinets sound really good. I have a 2x12 cabinet that came with my 65 Bandmaster that works really well with my Express clone. I had a couple of the larger vertical cabinets at one time. They were just too big to carry around, but they really sounded nice.

Can anyone comment on using Cedar in place of pine ?

The bar that has the best smelling restroom in Nashville is paneled in Cedar and I like the 2 tone look of the Cedar, knots and all.

I googled, found this forum, and it seemed like alot of good people here (so I registered!!!)

if anybody has done this or something like it speak up...

I am in the planning stages now, so any advice is appreciatted.
