Opinions on SE plate load?

Post by Firestorm »

Suppose I wanted to build a single-ended power amp with parallel output tubes. Picking a load impedance is straightforward enough as long as the tubes are the same. But what if I wanted to mix, say, a 6V6 and an EL34? Would you err on the side of too large a load (from the EL34's perspective) or too low (for the 6V6)? Maybe use UL connections to increase load tolerance? Or maybe use two OTs?

I'll likely have to do this empirically, but thought I'd see if anyone has tried something similar. Any thoughts?

You might be able to find an operating point where they are both happy at the same load. Adjusting screen voltage will go a long way towards this. But most likely, nothing will blow up if you just pick a point halfway between the two.
Life is a tale told by an idiot -- full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

...in other words: rock and roll!
