Need a shop amp

Post by Luthierwnc »

I'd like to get a cheap little SS guitar amp to leave in the basement so I don't have to haul big tube amps up and down the stairs to test guitar repairs. Can anyone recommend a combo that actually sounds OK and that people put on EBay because their kid never played the Christmas present from three years ago?

It should have a clean tonal option, maybe a 10" speaker and cost less than the shipping :-) I don't have much experience with that kind of electronics but I'm sure somebody here at TAG knows a decent one from a bad one. Suggestions on ones to avoid are welcome. Ones that are terrible stock but can be improved with some soldering are also welcome. Cheers and

thanks, sh

I got a SS Vox pathfinder 15w for free with a blown power transistor, cost $2.00 to fix and is a decent bedroom amp.

I can't really say what exact model, but there are dozens of Peavey small combos on Ebay for really good prices. Many of there little practice amps are decent sounding.

It's not completely non-tube (12AX7 and a couple of 6V6s) but my friend brought his Super Champ XD over and it sounded pretty good. I've seen them on sale for $150 before but they normally go for $200 new. He actually keeps it around as a gig backup and it is small and light.

There are two Peavey Bandit 65's for sale on my local Craig's list $50 each.

I used one of these for years.
