4ohm 12" speakers?

Post by Dingleberry »

Hi.

Just making final tweaks for my 6v6 p-p cathode bias combo.
Yesterday when I tested the OT for correct output impedance and got 4ohms, I noticed that 12" 4ohm speakers are nearly as rare as hens teeth.

A quick search gave me just about Emi Texas heat, Jensen Neo 12 and C12K.
Looks like Weber makes nearly every speaker 4ohms, but it's a little bit confusing, cause there are so many alternatives and there is no sensitivity chart... What weber speaker would give most volume and headroom?
You guys have any experience in weber speakers?
What speaker do you recommend for 1x12" tweed style amp?

You might like the Texas Heats. I have a pair, and they're big and clean.

Take a look at Warehouse Guitar Speakers. Most that have used them give them a good rating.

You might look into the Weber California, it's made for big sound with a goodly amount of headroom.

You can also call them. They aren't as talkative as when Ted was still around, but you can still simply call and ask.

Or just use two 8 ohm speakers in parallel.

My thoughts exactly. Nice big sound from a 2-12.
I think Weber will make any of their speakers in whatever impedance you want; just ask. They make excellent speakers.

Weber made me three 12 ohm 10", two Alnico, one ceramic, for a tweed Bandmaster. Perfect 4 ohms all three in parallel.

I was thinking about the texas heat. Probably got to try one and see how it sounds and will it suit my needs.

Took a look also at the Warehouse guitar speakers as labb recommended.
Nice looking speakers, but not a single 12" 4ohm speaker in the catalog...

Local Weber dealer didn't have any Californias in stock so that's not an option at the moment.

If I only could find 4ohm Vintage 30. They are rare beasts but they exist.
Otherwise I would use two 8ohm speakers in parallel but the combo is only 1x12 size...

Tested it with my 2x12 cab loaded with 72' Celestion blackbacks, sounded great though.

I actually opened my italian made Steelphon 2x12 cabinet that has been lying around for years, mostly because of it's size... 2x12" speakers in a size of a Ampeg 8x10" cabinet and not a single handle. Italian roadies must have been very happy back in the sixties...

It was a 8ohm cab and for my surprise there was two 4ohm speakers connected in series instead of that typical 2x16ohms in parallel.
I immediately installed one in and actually I had a really loud and quite pleasing sound. Not a clue who made those speakers. There is a sticker on the back and it says "specially manufactured for steelphon".
I might take a pictue and show you, if the construction/looks will ring any bells. Huge ceramic magnet ang odd coloured frame.

Got to get my Tele back from studio so I can make the final tweaks wit it, been only playing LPjr trough it. Great thick drive sounds with that, but the Tele will be my main guitar with that amp so I wanna do the fine tuning with my trusty workhorse.

I had the same situation and went with the Texas Heats. I am still very pleased with them.
