Look at what is on my bench right now!

I am working on restoring this beast:

Its owner is a prominent South Orange Co. Atty. He has a lot of really cool vintage stuff I have helped him restore or at least get back to working condition. :D

Wow what a beast!

Interesting tube locks on the power tubes.

I'll bet that thing is loud when working properly.

I saw BTO about a dozen years ago. Randy Bachman had one of those monsters on each side of the drummer. Sounded really good.

That is an older one 6146 tubes. I've worked on quite afew of these amps.If you replace any of the caps,be sure you ground to the same place the old ones were grounded.

'69, maybe early '70. The Stones toured with these, this was during their Ampeg period, and the plate cap cables would come off all the time, so that's why Ampeg switched to 6550s.

85 or 90 lbs. I can't move mine ('75) any more by myself.

Make sure you change all the filter caps, you may have to approximate some of the values today. And check the heater hum adjustment pot, they are always burned out. Oh, and also check the 8K2 dropping resistor, they burn out too.

The SVT has two chassis - one for the power amp which is tubes up and one for the preamp which is tubes down.

It's a bit of a monster!

Make sure to get off the contact as soon as possible the heat from the soldering iron will lift the old traces off the PCB if you aren't careful.

... all that and the caution regarding PC traces too.

Thanks for reminding me of this amp. I, too, used to work with one - and now I'm recovering from back surgery for a herniated disc. Might be related???
