Bushings to adapt split shaft pots to set screw knobs
Anyone ever used these bushings to adapt a split shaft pot for set screw knob usage? If so, did you use anything (glue/expoxy) to secure the brass bushing to the split shaft ?
In the glory years of A line quality I'm thinking one could have torqued the set screw down enough to pinch the bushing against the shaft to keep it from moving. I'm not so sure about the cheap offshore knobs these days, I've cracked more than one.

I haven't used those converter bushings yet but what I have done before is take something like cardboard or something of the right thickness and make a small shim that I put into the split of the shaft so that when I tighten the set screw on the knob, the shaft doesn't smash together.
I also would wrap the shaft with tape if it was smaller than the knob hole.
Seemed to work OK.
Of course the best thing is to find the right pot with a solid shaft but that isn't always possible.

I use a thin piece of alluminium foilwhat I have done before is take something like cardboard or something of the right thickness and make a small shim that I put into the split of the shaft so that when I tighten the set screw on the knob, the shaft doesn't smash together.
I think you can also do it with some epoxy into the split of the shaft instead to put a foil of some material
that way you must wait until the epoxy hardens

That's kind of what I was thinking. I would use scotch tape to position the bushing about .020 beyond the end of the shaft and then use a syringe to fill the split shaft/bushing with epoxy. A little aluminum powder mixed with MarineTex should do the trick.Kagliostro wrote:

I haven't seen any, but I did pick up some 1/8" pot shaft to 1/4" converter bushings from Mouser awhile back. I think it would simple drill out the bushing ID to .188.selloutrr wrote:any cap or adaptor to convert a 3/16th shaft to 1/4"?

Yeah or use JB Weld which makes several different epoxies, one I know is for patching metal and it is black.

I'm unable to see a picture if there is a picture in the first post so can't address that but i have used these on split shafts with no problems.

Have also made bushings to adapt a 1/8" shaft to 1/4" knob using 1/4" brass rod and drilling out on the drillpress.

I use a piece of wire tie plastic. The larger ties are the perfect size. Cut to fit, and they fill the gap great.

Andy thanks for the tip, your idea was much less painless. I used an appropriate thickness nylon cable clamp as donor material, while extending the bushing about .025 beyond the end of the shaft and then securing everything up by putting two drops of super glue in the end. Looks like it's going to turn out as well as any solid shaft pot.FUCHSAUDIO wrote:I use a piece of wire tie plastic. The larger ties are the perfect size. Cut to fit, and they fill the gap great.
