Source For Nice Looking Nuts & Bolts? 4-40 etc

Post by rp »

These were made (or packaged) by Waldom, I got them years ago, no idea where, but they're really nice looking in nickel plate and the heads are flat not domed. Similar to what you'd see on old USA made stuff like Dynaco kits. Aesthetically these were my fave. Can't find them anymore or anything similar. I live in the the most influential city in the country, maybe the world and I don't think there's a street level electronics store left, other than Radio Shack. Internet searching has proved fruitless.

So, I'm looking for nickel plate, slot, flat head, 4-40 1/4" and other bigger sizes too 8-32, 10-32 for the trannies. I'll be happy with stainless steel too, or any other pretty looking nuts and bolts anyone wants to recommend.

I'm quite fond of s/s cap and button head screws for builds.

A local mom & pop hardware store. It's the last of it's kind and the only place locally of which I can find these down to small as 2-56.

oooo! :D Smallparts has a great functional website. I know M-C but sometimes their web catalog is unfathomable. I just figured the screws would be that way. I'm surprised how easy it is to search.

Big Thanks.

I love finding odd industrial stuff like this, useless but cool:

The ones you want are called "binding head" machine screws. McMaster carries them.

Here is the list of Waldom retailers. They still make those screws. I bought some not too long ago from a store in Baltimore...Baynesville Electronics...and it's listed on the website!

+1 on Bolt Depot. Suggest you order 10-24/8-32/6-32 and 4-40 phillips pan head. Bolts in 1/4", 3/8" , washers, and locknuts for your amp building.

Ordering these has been the biggest improvement in my hobby since I set up resistor and capacitor indexed cabinets.

$20 or 30 now will keep you at your bench rather than harware hunting around town.

I too am fond of the SS button heads with 5/32nds Allen sockets mated to SS aircraft lock nuts. I'm one of those clowns who is mesmerized by the "Beauty in the Details" affectations. I have some local suppliers who's entire
stock is composed of whatever is being liquidated by a failed Silicon Valley
related manufacturing firm. This dictates that I snatch up in equal bulk quantity every manner of trickness while the gettin's good because the
following week it may be gone for good! Bonus niceness is the prices reflect the "pennies on the dollar" liquidation pricing the principals settled for.

After all my bragging about Mecca for the fastener afflicted, I'm in need of
typical US made #3 FHWS and sadly all I can choose from is Chinese junk
that look like Zinc plated dog dookies. I can't use SS (pronounced by my Mexican compadres as, "Estainless Esteel" because the screws should develop the patina of 50 year old OEM humbucker pick up ring screws on my MIJ Lester Polfus styled mimicry. The Devil's in the details with
OCD. And a fastener fetish that escalated to unrepentant Bakelite knob hording won't get me thrown in a California booby hatch. AFAIK anyway.
