I Scored Last Night!

Post by selloutrr »

Even better then sex!.. ok well that depends on the partner but..

I scored a very early Sundown 1x12 combo last night. I haven't openned it up yet but it pre dates the SD1000 model ('83). The tube sockets are attached to the chassis and not a PCB, the back is labeled with label tape like a Trainwreck or early Mesa instead of usual silk screen. Loaded with a single EV 12L series II 12" speaker. 5 Tungsram 12AX7 preamp tubes, and a matched pair of USA RCA 6550 and original footswitch. I'll post pics soon I need to put it on the bench and give it good going over, a cleaning, and possibly a cap job. A few of the pots are scratchy but over all the amp functions.

I'll post pics probably this evening.

And the price? :D Come on, thats what will make it interesting. I love the stories about picking up an old tweed twin or such for $50. That speaker is worth a couple hundred. Anyways, good on ya.

Dennis Kager is the designer of the Sundown amps.

They have a pretty good reputation for performance and reliability.
I forget where he works now but will reportedly talk to you about his amps if you have questions.

Nice score indeed!

Are those RCA 6550s actually made by RCA or just labeled RCA? Reason I ask is I have some used '70s 6550s that are marked RCA (in red) but I believe actually made by Sylvania. If they are straight sided glass coming straight out of a metal base, with the glass the ID of the base, they are likely Sylvanias. Mine have two top getters and one side getter, and "6550 USA" on the glass.

UPDATE: Just saw the pix, those must be real RCA or maybe relabeled GE, but not Sylvania.

Some people have all the luck! Man, was that a Craig's List? How'd you find it?

Correction: The output tubes are GE electron 6550 USA not RCA sorry I could only see the USA silk screen which looked the same as the RCA 6550 I run in my Risson LTA's. They test matched at 81% / 83% and 82% 83% no leaks on the Amplitrex quick test.

The 5 Tungsram 12ax7 test between 97% - 116%.
I'll do the full tests on all the tubes when I open it up.

I found it on Craigslist. I use a search engine that searches Craigslist and Ebay nation wide. I have a list of amps and parts I want/need. ever day I type in the list and see what's available. I wasn't really in the market for another sundown but for the price I couldn't pass it up.

i agree it's not easy to find deals this one just fell into place. I do spend 2-4hrs+ a day looking for parts. My success rate is about 90%

it was poorly listed and i had to buy it sight unseen and just hope it worked. The tubes, speaker, and footswitch were just a nice surprise.

I was most interested in the fact it was not silk screened and chassis mounted tube sockets. I'm looking forward to finding out the history on this amp. i'm guessing '80-'82 pre SD1000.
