Delete reverb from posted (somewhere else) Ma* 18 schematic

Post by chopstuck »

If this question is kosher .....

I want to build this amp without reverb as I have heard it may have better gain character.

I would like to know what point I can attach the pre amp Master pot wiper to the power amp. I was guessing the .01 input cap at the PI.

What I want to make sure is I'm not losing the gain of the reverb recovery stage as the Black face Princeton does to it reverb brother.

I would appreciate any feedback .

What 18 watter came with reverb?

There is a model with tremolo but I haven't seen one with reverb.
Got a schematic?

Don't let that smoke out!

There were a very very small amounts of real 18 watter marshalls that had reverb.
I have some pics somewhere of the inside of one. They are super rare. There should also be some info about them on 18 watt.com.

Chopstuck,

Are you referring to the Z amp? Out of respect for Dr. Z, not sure it's kosher to discuss here since it is in production. You would likely need to moderate interstage attenuation to make up for the lack of a reverb recovery stage which may be driving the PI. The master could be inserted where you have indicated.

I appreciate the sensitivity to a prodution amp showed by posters, but I can chime in with a couple tips.

First the MAZ 18 doesn't use a Fender style reverb circuit so no fear loosing a stage in the recovery. You can wax V3 and V4 and input the PI from the Master, even though I drive the Effects Loop send first then the Return to input of the PI.

The gain is boosted in the Pre-amp in a couple of standard ways, 220K on V1 plate, 25/25 across the cathode stage driving the CF V2, and bumping up the EL-84's Grid Load resistors to 330K or 470K in V3.

Thanks so much for your reply Mike, I try to be sensitive to the business side of amp building and not overt, but I love amps. I build a lot of them and end up keeping most of them because they continue to teach me so much. Almost all my amps are a melange of different " features" with different values and different hardparts. I use what I have on hand to get where I'm going. I appreciate your chiming in to assist in the gain recovery. When my own amp is done is will be and sound nothing like a production amp of yours but like what can be done with ingredients I have on hand. Tuning it for maximum tone but with a heck of a lot of organ parts involved.
