buying g-10
I'm starting my first tube amp project and was wondering if someone could help me with finding a good source for epoxy glass (g-10).
Any help would be great, thanks in advance.

Mc-Master Carr
G-7/G-11 have higher max temps, better for repeated soldering.
G-10.... 284
G-11.... 320
G-7...... 338
natural hard fiber.... 425

I'd recommend Ken at Watts Tube Audio / Turretboards.com. He has plenty of pre-cut standard sizes and will cut to any size you like if you don't want to have to deal with cutting it yourself.
Re: buying g-10
Hoffman also sells the G10 and the eyelets for it or turrets if you prefer.
He only sells it in a 3 1/8 width which is pretty standard.
You just pick the length.
A little more spendy but it might save you from having to cut this stuff.
It is the pits to cut! If you don't have a wet saw or a decent table saw, it can be a mess. The dust is very bad and you should not breathe it in.

down draft table or hefty exhaust fan, it is nappy stuff to cut, use some
basic safety considerations.

The 1/8" thick stuff is not DIY friendly. I use 1/16", which I either cut on a bandsaw or use a bench cutter...which pretty much requires a machine shop.

Thanks for the help! Will look into these later after work.
Re: buying g-10
I agree it is hard to cut, but I don't think it is as hard as has been mentioned. I use a jigsaw with a metal-cutting blade. I put wide blue masking tape on the board, draw my lines, put on a mask, fire up my shop vac for dust, and start cutting. A fresh jigsaw blade does a good job. A dull one sucks.
Wife: How many amps do you need?
Me: Just one more...

I use 1/16" and cut it with an old swing arm paper cutter - essentially zero dust.
But do be careful when you drill the holes.

+1 on McMaster Carr.
I use a portable tile-cutter saw table. It has a water resevoir underneath so the blade is constantly wet; no dust.
Now drilling is another thing. Shop vac.

Same here. I never thought it was all that hard to cut.I also like 1/8" G-10 from Mc Master Carr. Jigsaw with metal cutting blades is the way I've done it for the past dozen DIY amps I built.Pretty cheap part of the amp considering most parts so if you mess up a piece no huge deal (Been theremlp-mx6 wrote:I agree it is hard to cut, but I don't think it is as hard as has been mentioned. Re: buying g-10
Yes I have tried that too, hard to make a straight cut with a jigsaw.
I had to sand the edge smooth and straight but it worked.

Re: buying g-10
If I'm real worried about straight cuts I'll clamp a straight edge to the g-10. But I'm so damn good at cutting a straight line I usually don't need one.Structo wrote:Yes I have tried that too, hard to make a straight cut with a jigsaw.
