D style hybrid w/5879 OD?

Post by 10thTx »

Anyone ever tried a D type typology but using a pentode (like EF86, 5879, 6AU6 or 5654) instead of the dual triodes? I've been using 5879 V1 preamps in all 3 of my amps and like that fat warm tone and touch sensitivity.

I'm thinking something like this might have some similarities (within limits) of a D'Lite clean channel but with a very different overdriven tone. I would presume it would lose some sustain and harmonics but would have a fat warm tone to it?

I have an amp I'm considering converting.

5879 OD

I built this amp and love it. Probably the most versatile amp I've built from clean to overdrive. Here is the tweaked schematic.

Verrrry interestinkk!! as they used to say on TV. 5879 is a killer pentode. Didn't HAD do a few amps with EF86, I think that was only in the clean circuit though.

5879 OD

I don't currently have sound bits but hope to record something in mid Jan or so.

To my ears, the clean has a very warm full tone hanging right up at the edge of overdrive. The reverb allows alot of the mids to be verbed adding to the richness of the tone, IMO.

With the 5879 OD kicked in I can get a wide range of a simple "boost" to the clean channel or dial up to decent zztopish type overdrive. However, even with the OD kicked in, you can hear the notes clearly in the chording. The OD does not sound like a D'Lite but has a tone all it's own maybe with a little more chime and maybe less smoothness. Using two pots allows me to control the volume of the overdrive to match the clean channel or be louder.

The VVR makes a nice addition in controlling the volume without sacrificing tone. And the cathode biasing allows me to simply swamp JJ 6V6's or Tung-Sol 5881's.

I'm very happy with how this turned out.

Hello, I'm working on a clean channel only D-clone. It has a Schumacher 334-0-334vt and a Triode Electronics Dynaco 470 copy OT with 6L6s. I also have a 6SJ7 that keeps showing up every couple of years. I might try this. Thanks

Really cool design. I think the D style topology is a good platform for adding extra stages. I've been wanting to try the same thing with an EF86. Have you thought about making the entrance to the 5879 a panel pot instead of a trimmer ? Might make it more versatile.

While I have it labled as "trim", it's not a trimmer it is a "drive" pot on the front panel. I didn't realize I used different labels between the schematic and layout.

Hi, I was inspired by TX's design and built something like it using a 6sj7. I used a Bluesmaster PI and a Bluesmaster 50 power string: 135ohm choke with a 500ohm resistor in series -- 8.2k --15k-- 2.2k Plates on the 6l6s are 441v Screens are 439v PI is 309 and 306 6sj7 is 176v 12ax7 is 155v on the input side and 257v I haven't played it yet and I would like to know if the voltages look like they are in the ballpark. If I play it tonight and it sounds awful I will surely not sleep well. Thank you for any insight.

I'll be really interested in your amp review. I am continuing to love my
5879 OD amp. Really has lots and lots of tone from clean/warm to boost to overdriven.
