Re: jmp 50watt with magnetic components transformer set
You're right, and it's obvious to me it's whatever it's payed thru thats responsible for that sizzle. I couldn't get that sound with any pickup i've ever played thru on most of the amps i've owned and liked. The SH11 is supposed to actually be less bright than most HB's. according to the charts it's not as high output as the JB which is 16 k, but like you said thats not a reliable gauge due to the contribution of the magnets for one thing. I've had JB's and they don't seem near as hot as the dimarzio super dist i have in mine now. The custom custom should be less because of the lesser resistance, plus the alnico magnet. So it may not be all that hot. As should be obvious, i like a pretty hot bridge HB in my strats because i find i can have a very wide range of clean to distorted via my guitar's pickup selector and volume pot.

More throat, depth and meat on the MC. I like it... Sounds like amp porn doesn't it
Re: jmp 50watt with magnetic components transformer set
Hi, I have a 57 strat reissue, and when i first got the guitar, the bridge pickup was unplayable, it was sooo icepicky. I ended up changing it, firstly to a texas special, and then to a jb single coil humbucker, i didn't change the pot, i left the 250k one in there, i also changed the other two to the kinman wookstock pickups, and now that is my fav guitar. With this new guitar it is a tokai 150-gt, i was going to go with a gibson, but heard so many bad reviews, so did bother. I can say i happy with the tokai, just don't know what are the right pickups. The jb sings really nice but if the amp is not loud enough it can sound a bit shrill, but if i use my crunch box clone it sounds fantastic at any levels. Just hoping these new magnets will give me a couple of different options, before i start buying new pickups.iknowjohnny wrote:I've been meaning to try a duncan custom custom in the bridge of my strat. i researched them and a lot of people seem to think they are like a JB with a meatier sound and no shrillness. It appears to be a really good pickup for the bridge os a strat. I'd have tried one by now but i'n just so gun shy about pickups because it seems like for every one i end up liking i buy 5 that i don't, and i usually take a huge loss. But from what i read it sounded like THE puickup for those who want a non shrill JB. It's alnico but i don't remember which one, 2 or 5.
Thanks

Hi, sounds like a good pickup, as you say it hard to go with the clips. I think will wait til i try the a2 magnet, and see how that goes.Structo wrote:Is it the SH-11 Custom Custom?
Seems as a very high output with a DCR of 14.4K
Says it's for a bright guitar and I know you can't go by DCR or sound clips but the sound clip sounds very sizzly.

Yeap there is a difference i also think MC is a bit better
but it would be great if you could record the two trannies using 100% the same amp, tubes, rec setup etc. That would give a greater idea of their sonic differences.

Re: jmp 50watt with magnetic components transformer set
Naw, just save your self lots of money by starting to use MC trannies and have fun building as well as playing.
That's what this is all about isn't it.

Again, i don't think you could tell much from clips. But i'll tell you what i felt was better. The MC had better tone AND feel when using cleaner and inbetween sound. For example, with the amp's gain about 2:00, and let me say that the gain on this amp is about as much as a classic 30's distortion channel, if i turn the guitar down to around 5 to 7 i get slightly dirty but chimy and clean when picked lightly. That tone is where the MC excels over the hammond. I suppose clips would reveal it, but still you wouldn't be able to FEEL the improved dynamics and other aspects of the feel. Once cranking the two sound much more similar. But that inbetween tone is where i spend most of my time so that was why i felt the MC was better. And overall the harmonic complexity was richer, but it's that cleaner tone where it becomes more obvious.electric wrote:Yeap there is a difference i also think MC is a bit better

that said, what a great deal for the money ! not only cjheap but better than some higher $ trannys. My only fear now is the PT only having 150 Ma. After posting about that here it looks like it may be a bit risky at gigs. so i may go back to the hammond there. I fear that tho because while people say the PT shouldn't affect tone, i fear it will.
Re: jmp 50watt with magnetic components transformer set
Hi, i don't think i would take the transformer out of the amp, it would been to much work, but i will probably make another clip with the same tubes, and see how it sounds.electric wrote:Yeap there is a difference i also think MC is a bit better

Hi, Which hammond are you using. The one i have is the 290gx, and it also has 150ma. It is exactly the same as the mc, right down to the same wiring code.iknowjohnny wrote:Again, i don't think you could tell much from clips. But i'll tell you what i felt was better. I think I've mentionned this before, but I have a 290GX that I bought a year ago and it says 213mA on it.dukeamps wrote:

For some reason, they changed the rating to 150mA since (which is on par with the MC), yet it's exactly the same size!
That thing is huge (bigger than the PT in my DSL100) and never gets hot, even after 3 hours of playing loud rock.
I've just assumed they changed the testing procedure for rating it.
From what I understand, both the Hammond and the MC are repro of vintage units and thus should be spec'ed the same internally.
Amplifiers built:
Marshall 2204 head with some mods
Low-power 2204 (cathode biased 6V6s)
Single-knob dual-6K6GT amps using a Wattkins uPCB
AC30 clone with Plexified preamp section
AX84 Firefly
