I thought that was your face, but if you had your face tattooed on your face, you would end up with the barber shop effect.

Steve,
If you are going to build something along the lines of the JTM45, I suggest just going ahead and build one. The folks here can help you tweak it if it isn't quite what you envision. Try these clips on for size:

Just thought it would give you some idea of a JTM45.

I shall shave my head, and tattoo a blonde wig in place. That should get me noticed on American Idol.Gibsonman63 wrote:I thought that was your face, but if you had your face tattooed on your face, you would end up with the barber shop effect.
Steve, after you build the JTM, you are like 30 minutes away from 9 of the most popular amps ever built. Ditch that tube rectification. It's only another thing to go wrong, and you can do the same effect with a resistor, which fails about 99,000% less when you don't want it to fail.

In context:
Lower the cathode cap on the input. Dump the rectifier. Increase filtering. Switch to 33k slope resistor and 500pf treble cap. Switch out KT66's for EL34's or E34L's.
It's not just advice, it's history.
It's what Marshall did. By the description (compared to Bassman) of what Steve says about his friend's dream amp, he's describing a 68-72 JMP 50, which is a JTM 45 with EL34, a shifted tone stack, a solid state rectifier, and a whole new attitude. (and filtering change.. ehhh.. and this is where the heart of the tone is hiding.. err.. kind of)

Re: Any Landmines Waiting for JTM45 Builder?
Oops, I left that out. It's been a while, but I think I only upped the filtering to 32uf instead of 50uf. Maybe makes it a little more laid-back and less in your face.Reeltarded wrote: (and filtering change.. ehhh.. and this is where the heart of the tone is hiding.. err.. kind of)
But definitely the filtering is a place to play with the feel of the amp.

Re: Any Landmines Waiting for JTM45 Builder?
Amen. Altho' a good sounding JTM45 also sounds alright with SC (but better with HB). They also had different iron to the 5F6A (i.e.: Jim picked what was available in the UK at the time) and different speakers, and mustard caps, and those weird looking metalic-blue filter caps with the darker blue spiral and the two crimps, that I can never read the name of.LeftyStrat wrote:I would get this guy to listen to some clips. I've always felt the jtm45 was best with humbuckers, single coils not so much.
He who dies with the most tubes... wins

Man, that JTM45 really sounds superb ! I must build one.... after I finish other not finished amp projectsstatorvane wrote:Steve,

What makes you different from us?
ONE more unfinished amp project won't hurt anything, plus three days of motivation and you will be out of things to do!

So it's actually a 50W 1987 "Plexi" we're talking about? Then I get the history part... Must have missed something.Reeltarded wrote: he's describing a 68-72 JMP 50, which is a JTM 45 with EL34, a shifted tone stack, a solid state rectifier, and a whole new attitude. Don't build a JTM45 and expect it to sound like that.

We are basically joking about starting where Marshall started.. then ending up where Marshall ended up.

Re: Any Landmines Waiting for JTM45 Builder?
I'm not getting email alerts on this stuff, so I had no idea you guys were still here.
My plan is to build a plain old JTM45, just the way the kit says to. After that, we can take out the hammer drill and plasma cutter and start bending it to our will. I wish he would let me machine a chassis.
I came back here to re-read what you said about chokes. He's trying to choose between 3H and 20H. I told him to go with Classictone. Worked great in the Bassman.

I listened to those Youtubes, and they didn't do a thing for me! I'm just not a Marshall guy, I guess.
We got the board populated, and the sockets are installed. I decided to take a break so I could study up on Merlin Blencowe's heater-wiring tips. We're also planning to stick diodes in the rectifier, along with the tube, as a safety measure.
I can't believe how much prettier turrets are. I'm all done using eyelets.
