Great idea, Tom. In fact, I own a 2x12 cab that is switchable from mono 4 ohms to stereo 8 ohms per side. I usually run a Line 6 X3 Live in front, so stereo effects are available.

And that meets my goal of keeping the original hardware, assuming it will work with EL84s. And why not, since it was designed that way?

I suppose someone should ask. If you want to rebuild the amp rather than eBaying it, how much are you willing to invest in the project? And how loud would you want it to be?

I would invest one or two hundred dollars, if necessary. But this is going to be a studio amp, and will probably never play with a band. So low to moderate volume, bluesy and responsive breakup, etc. No hi-gain shred needed. I'd still prefer to keep the EL84s as power section.

You should be able to do it for that amount.

Sometimes tweaking the values can nickel and dime you a bit but it sure is satisfying when you get it dialed in.
Perhaps a two EL84 Rocket on one side and a Marshall 18w on the other side.

A friend of mine tried to market an amp a few years back that was very unique.
It contained a Fender Blackface side and a Marshall Plexi side.
The foot pedal had a small platform that you could rotate and blend the two amps in real time. Sort of like the Egnator Rebel except this amp had the two different preamps and a solid state output section, so it was a lot like micing an amp to the PA.
It cost too much to build so he finally had to give it up.
He did have a website but I can't find it now.

I'm still most interested in making a Spitfire clone. Ceriatone offers PT, OT and choke for $90, but add $100 for shipping!

Can y'all spec Hammond or other replacements for OT and PT, and choke? I can't find details of the choke in any of the FIVE layouts and schematics I found! And there's too many Hammond choices here for me to know what I need: http://www.hammondmfg.com/5cindex.htm

Just use the Ken Watts Heyboer 18w Marshall standup set that's what I used and for two other 18w projects.

Decided to strip the chassis and build a Lightning clone. Anyone want to make an offer on the PT and OTs before I auction them off? $80?

The Lightning breaks up too earlier compared to the Spitfire.

Is that, "It breaks up too early," or, "It breaks up earlier, too, which is cool."?

I see you built a Lightning recently, Mark. I think I'll start a new thread, and hopefully you can help me when I have questions. In fact, I feel a question coming on now…
