Sing along "I've got mercury poisoning, it's always fatal and it don't go away." Graham Parker, one of my favorites! He was singing about his record company but it's true anyway.

Fluorescent tubes as well as these new twisty bulbs, mercury yes. Used to be in 9V batteries a long time ago too. And some old rectifier tubes. How about in thermostats in just about every house. And thermometers too. Including the ones you use to check for fever.

When I was in school other kids used to bring mercury to school and play with it. I bet you'll find some in the cracks & crevices of every old school classroom. Mmmm good! A couple years ago around here one high school kid brought in a vial and one of his buddies dipped a cigarette in & smoked it to show how tough he was. WAS is the operative term, that kid is now a vegetable and will be living on a hospital bed for the rest of his miserable life. Tough - like a rutabaga - and has an IQ to match.

OK, does this mean I can use these Edison base Euro halogens in a Dim Bulb Tester?
I work for Panasonic in lighting r&d and were already past LED into OLED and even more fun and coming next...Laser Lighting. Check out BMW with the first Laser headlamps. The Future is happening now in lighting....fun.
As a kid I never thought I'd see the day, but they've given me my Communicator, now I want my Phaser. When's that coming?

Read somewhere that somebody's working on putting wifi in lightbulbs. Now that would be a network!

Everything is digital now even though the mercury ones are way more accurate.

I really hate the CFL's.

If they are cold like in my garage, they take about 5 minutes to get to their brightness.

I wish they had developed and perfected the LED lights that cost around $20 each now, before phasing out the incandescent's.

I went to a local store today and bought a bunch of the 60w and 75w bulbs.
I know they can sell them until the supply is exhausted but I hate the fact that my elected government is shoving this down my throat.
You can't use them in dimmers and they radiate noise.

Do you think the White House is all CFL's?

That's what I thought.........

True but you just need enough light to navigate. Same thing with my sidewalk light. When it's super cold out, it never warms up. Just casts a sickly green light BUT it's enough to see where you're going. No matter. I don't need the light at all, and most visitors are too busy squinting at their little plastic pocket pals. They'd rather call me up than push the doorbell. What's this world coming to?

Don't worry, they did. Just making a big profit. That's what it's all about, ya know? LED lamps will likely drop in price, like pocket calculors did between 1968 and 1972. '68 four-function calculator, $125 in '68 dollars, plus change batteries all the time. By '72, open a checking account, get a free 4-function calculator. Banks were buying 'em for a buck apiece for giveaways. Now cheap calculators at most a couple bucks retail - solar powered - even works under an anemic twisty bulb - never needs batteries. Probably find 'em at your dollar store. For a dollar. Disposable.

LED lamps work with dimmers. Theoretically. I haven't tried it yet. CFL's not so much. No fluorescent likes dimmers. I can induce a little hum into my guitar if I hold it near a LED bulb.

Well Jimmy Carter put solar panels up, and Saint Ronald Reagan took 'em right down. "Now hear this: we won't have any cost saving in MY government! Or setting a good example! And that's final! Missile launch commences in five minutes."

Today? I'll bet there's lots of LED lamps. Yeh, nobody much likes CFL's. There's somebody I could ask. Doesn't have access to ALL areas. But I could get an answer about what's in the public areas and press zone. Stay tuned. May take a couple days.

Putting solar panels up for power for the Whitehouse 30 years ago is a political feel good do nothing waste money bunko move though. No?

Seriously.

Them healthcares and them light bulbs and them above the laws and them without regulation and them without a clue and them without anything to stop them.

us with their light bulbs, and their healthcare, and their regulation, and lots of clues but no balls to pick a leader at any level.

I have to blame someone. I blame us.

Yes the halogen gas just causes the tungsten to redeposit on the filament to make it last longer. So just an incandescent lamp really. It runs hotter and brighter. I like them in small fixtures for close up soldering...some of these parts are so small these days.
In theory, theory is the same as practice. In practice it's different.

First thing, the Carter panels were water heaters, not photovoltaic. They did not generate electricity.

Jimmy Carter had 'em put up and they were a news item June 1979. 34.5 years ago.

Ronald Reagan ordered them taken down in 1981. They were removed in 1986. Which goes to show you how seriously Reagan was taken even by his own staff. And why Ronny was in hot water for 5 years without having to pay a bill. You never heard him complain about THAT did you. And after noticing the hot water wasn't what it used to be, what did he do? Fly to a country that's run on geothermal, Iceland, tell a far fetched fairy tale (Star Wars Defense) to the leader of the Evil Empire, Mikhail Gorbachev, and got Gorby to believe him. Just amazin' the way things go, innit? I'll bet Ronny got a nice soak in a hot tub, met some real life trolls, lit the wet match to the wet fuse that fizzled out the cold war, came home and had a nice nap.

I have Gorebulbs in my kitchen (until the next time they blow). I turn on the light, stumble around in the dark, finish what I'm doing, and leave. Several minutes later, after I've gone, the lights reach nominal brightness.

Meanwhile, Gore's house requires its own nuclear plant.
Relax. It's SUPPOSED to smoke a little.

That's OK, each of John McCain's 7, 8, 9 oops I dunno how many houses, also have their own nu-cu-lar plant. Right under the golf course. Heat keeps the grass green in winter. Grows REAL fast too... He's going to show the Syrians how to do it just like him. Make hay even without any sunshine. Now that's what I call progress!

More of the same on the brush-cuttin' Bush ranch in Texas. Wonder when he's gonna finish gettin' all that brush cut?

Meanwhile, spring for one o' them newfangled LED bulbs. You'll be de-LIGHT-ed, I guarantee. Do like Princess Nancy sez, loosen up with the buck, and embrace the suck.

McCain doesn't pretend to be the messiah of green. Gore does. That is the difference you don't want to lose sight of here. Gore has a giant house that sucks up an insane amount of energy. Meanwhile, he took away our light bulbs and killed a huge number of American jobs. If he cared about energy, he'd live in a normal house and drive a dinky economy car, the way he expects us to.
Relax. It's SUPPOSED to smoke a little.
