Sorry to OP for going off topic, but this strikes a (dis)chord in me.

My high school counselor called my parents in. Then I got called out of class on the intercom. In the conference that followed, he suggested my parents send me to military school. Bastard.

Not meaning to brag, but I graduated in the top 10% of my class, so where he was coming from is anybodies guess. I suspect it was on account of me being a long-haired smart-ass at a time when that wasn't very acceptable or fashionable (late '60s).

Moral of the story, don't put much stock in what school counselors say. And sure-as-heck don't let them be the arbiters of your future.

Very nice once again Sagitt. Beautiful work! I've got a couple of questions for you. What sort of paper are you using, how thick is it and have you treated/coated it? Also you mentioned using a very light tension for the start and end turns of each layer to stop them falling into the winding margin. Is that the only secret? Is it all about using just the right amount of tension? That's the only area I still have trouble with. I've tried varied amounts of light tension but may need to play around more on my next wind to get it right. I also wonder if my hand winder is making it more difficult to get light but consistent tension and if I'd be better putting a motor drive on my winder just for that reason.

thank you guys!primary wire is 0.15mm,secondary 0.70mm.for insulation I use nomex 0.05 and 0.25mm and between two layers of secondary 0.18mm prespan, that is the green thing on the first image...Kato when you use two hand it is easier to control tension, you need to have electric motor or something...with lees tension on beginning and ending of layer I manage to wind it without wire slips away.sometimes it is not possible because as I said wire has mind of its own!

Thanks Sagitt. I might have to put a motor on my winder and see how it helps.

Cool! Good luck with the vacuum varnishing.

I'm winding another set of 30W transformers and varnishing as I go again. But after that I want to do a 5W SE OT on a bobbin without sides and vacuum varnish after winding, like I did with the first ones I wound. I've been experimenting with tension and am getting better at making sure the end turns don't fall into the winding margin.
