Another decent preamp worth looking at is the burman 501 pro, its a simple preamp lots of gain with the final output being a cathode follower. Again no OT so a saving on both space and cash. Plus you also have the simplicity of all being single ended circuits and plenty of scope for tweaking.

My setup is a vox VT40+ and a modded KLD marshall 18 clone into a stereo mosfet. Simply the best setup ive had in 40 plus years. The DIY route is always fun but there are so many good preamps available and going second hand could save you a furtune. I have an old unused peavey TGRaxx knocing around. This has no OT but simply takes the output from one of the 12ax7's via a capacitor and a couple of resitors. These sound ok but are better known for the clean settings. The schematic is online and worth looking at. Sorry i aint got the hang of posing pics here yet.

You could modify the first stage as a bassman, early orange, etc, etc.

Thanks I have a preamp, what is being discussed is power amp options for a 1U rack space.
Oddly enough, I have a Vox VT40+ that will go on ebay soon as it's surplus now. Great amp and very loud, brilliant value for literally peanuts!

Dumble things are usually played at volumes where it is 99% about the preamp and the output is damned near idlling.

You will be surprised is my bet.

This is a 50w amp on a Palmer PGA-04 into a 2200w Class-D stereo amp and a quad of Marshall cabs.

I set it up right at the edge of taking off and played it slow to show how reactive it is. It does the same thing with +3db on totally clean setting. Crazy good.

Thanks, it sounds good. Hoping for some similar touch sensitivity. I know the #183 preamp is incredibly sensitive through the tube power amps, how will Class D hold up?

My vox was £40 secondhand. Modded it a bit and it now sits in my rack leaving me with a spare box and speaker. Free box and speaker if any one can arrange collection from liverpool. I dont think its worth the hassel of selling on fleabay
